About Jonathan
I am a graduate student in engineering who is entering a program in applied mathematics in the Fall. This requires me to have a solid understanding of both math and physics, as well as understand the connection between the two. As a result, I love to ground mathematics in physical reality with providing examples which use physics. This satiates a complaint found in most math classes: "when will this ever be useful?" My hope is to not only teach math and physics but to inspire others to see why they are such amazing subjects (especially mathematics). I have tutored at the college level previously for over a year and am a CRLA certified tutor.

My teaching method begins with getting a feel for what the student understands about a certain material and having them explain as best they can to me about what that material is. Continually doing this exercise does two things: gives me a gauge of the progress of a student as well as allows them to put the material in their own words which helps with information processing and internalization. I would then get to the material that they do not understand, beginning with a problem that they have already worked out (from class or from a hw). I would then give them a variation on the problem which is at the same difficulty level (i.e. changing some of the numbers) so that no new material is introduced and they get a feel for the repetition of the problem. Then as they become comfortable with this, we can start with making the problem more complicated and introducing more material until the student is at the level that the course requires.
