Multiple Academic Discipline (English, History, Mathematics, Natural Science, Biology, and Chemistry) and SAT/ACT Tutor with 21 years experience in Raleigh, NC.

Methodology

My experience has honed my ability to identify and build on each student’s strengths to raise student grades and test scores with practical effective strategies. Student who work with me routinely raise SAT scores by 200 points and ACT scores by 4 composite points. Students improve at least a full grade in academic classes. I love my job, and for this, I am extremely lucky. Working one on one with a student is a rewarding personal experience based on mutual trust. The student can not hide one on one as he or she can in a large class. If they don't understand something, it is apparent. It builds character to say, "I don't know;" it takes courage. I respect this relationship by always remaining positive and providing instruction as a leader or coworker, not as an authoritarian. I never ask the student to do anything that I am not willing to do with him or her, and I never condescend. Mistakes are part of the learning process. It is not a teacher's perfection that inspires students, it is his or her authenticity and genuine care for the student's success. A teacher is not only imparting knowledge along the generations, but a teacher models the behavior of discovery and the sheer enjoyment of learning and academic achievement.

Background

Teaching was not my first love. Ironically, I disliked English Literature in High School. I earned a B.A. Philosophy from Tulane University because I love theoretical and abstract thinking and the quest to understand and define reality, God, and morality. I spent my twenties following my dream of being a professional singer-songwriter, performing original material from New York to Los Angeles before crowds of up to 400 people, but it never evolved into a dependable career, so I returned to Charleston, SC. A friend recommended I try substitute teaching; I loved it and enrolled in graduate school to earn a B.A. in English Literature and a Master's Degree in Teaching - Secondary School English to become a highly qualified certified teacher.

My experience as a songwriter compelled me to acquire excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Metaphor, simile, symbolism, analogy, imagery, and effective writing had become second nature. Also, engaging students in a classroom is a type of performance; it requires improvisational skills to react in witty debate or quickly solve unforeseen problems.

The ability to effectively grasp information from non-fiction sources and comprehend symbolism, theme, mood and other literary devices from poetry and fiction is essential to success in all academic disciplines as well as English Literature. The ability to build a strong multi-syllabic vocabulary to clearly express one’s ideas through the written and spoken word is paramount to the success of the individual in school, university, and professional life.
