AP Music Theory teacher with over twenty years of experience gives lessons from Basic Music Theory to AP Test Prep.

Methodology

My philosophy of music education centers around a nurturing and welcoming classroom culture with a high level of expectation. My students are free to make mistakes in a forgiving environment where learning from one’s mistakes is encouraged. I believe in challenging students to think critically and creatively. I believe in treating students with respect, dignity and compassion; validating their feelings, attitudes, and opinions about music. My goal is to create high achievers who develop a life long love of music through their educational experiences with the arts.

Background

I am a Music Teacher with over twenty two years experience in the public schools. I have taught AP Music Theory, Jazz Band, Band, Marching Band, and Music Theory Fundamentals. I have experience teaching online and in person with the Nevada Learning Academy and via Google Meet/Zoom. I am a current reader for the AP Music Theory exam and work for ETS as a reader for the PRAXIS Instrumental Music Exam.

I finally decided to go back to school 10 years after graduating high school, my music theory classes are really tough especially with distance learning. I knew that my old band director would be able to help me understand in a way that would work for me so I reached out! He gave me a lesson that was easy for me to understand and helped me retain in two days, what I couldn’t retain from 6 weeks of college lecture. Thank you so much for being supportive even after so much time has passed.

Cecil Myers was one of my band directors in high school and in those four years he offered me invaluable insight and knowledge that has helped me develop the skills to build a career in music. He understands music on the deepest level, has an amazing ear, and knows everything there is to know about harmony. And with all of these skills, he approaches his education with the most humble attitude and is there to truly help his students grow, no matter the starting point. It was an honor to be his student and it will serve anybody extremely well to study with him!

I was a student of Cecil Myers in high school, he taught my music theory classes and occasionally lead our jazz band throughout my whole high school experience. After knowing him and his teaching style for 4 years, I can safety say Cecil is a cut above the rest. He is a diligent teacher always giving insightful feedback and genuinely believing in the success of his students. To me there are music teachers, and then there is Cecil Myers; I cannot recommend him enough.

Cecil was one of the best teachers I had in high school. He was always so understanding and could explain things in a way that made always sense. Very knowledgeable and dedicated!

Mr Myers (Cecil) has taught me many things, much of which I was not mature enough to understand at the time, but those lessons were invaluable looking back. Everything he's told me was exactly what I needed to hear. He gave me a chance, was very patient, and encouraged me to push on when I needed it. I don't think I ever properly thanked him, but I should have.

He's passionate about music theory and can teach it better than anyone I know. He doesn't just understand the rules, but he also knows when and how to break them. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, I guarantee Mr Myers will open up new avenues of thought for you.

I studied jazz with Cecil at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts for two years and in that time I noticed significant improvements in my own playing but also a much greater appreciation and personal connection with jazz and music itself. Even though I wasn’t in a music theory program with him, his way of teaching theory helped me improve greatly, even more so than my actual music theory teachers. He’s a great teacher with a ton of knowledge to give, not to mention fun to be around and very humble. I would recommend him to anybody.
