My approach to essays is similar to my approach for STEM tutoring: I love Google Docs! For the latter, I encourage a student to come up with questions based on the content and to answer them, reinforcing the information and probing critical thinking progress.
For essays, I will start a first session by trying to sketch a roadmap or to edit what a student already has. I feel that I have a unique perspective as an applicant admitted to a rigorous university from an academically weak high school. Therefore, I will ask students what they are truly passionate about - not just what they feel or have been told will “check boxes” - and work with them to craft and polish a narrative that feels authentic and compelling. I want to encourage excitement and enthusiasm and to capture this in a way that feels most genuine to the student and their loved ones, because by doing this, they will be more likely to find a school or institution that fits their personality and goals. I was really fortunate as this was my undergrad experience, so I will try to work with students to revise drafts, through sharing Google Docs, and to provide constant support and encouragement whenever and however I can. I want to help with applications while serving as a cheerleader for my students, working as a team to shape an essay the student feels ready to submit.
I am a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis where I majored in Biology: Biochemistry and minored in Religion and Politics. Both have prepared me to pursue training as a physician-scientist, and I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to share what I have learned with my students.
I want to focus on college essays and general essay editing because I feel that these pieces serve as a conduit to understanding an applicant on a deeper level beyond stats. Many students are bright and exceptional, which may not be encompassed by their numbers for a number of reasons, so the essays allow for the student’s potential to shine through. I hope to cultivate a safe space to motivate my students to learn about the world around them and to grow. Further, I hope to foster a sense of confidence and enthusiasm for their college application cycle and the road ahead!
