Online English tutoring for high school students. ALTA tutors help students build fundamental skills that they need to become competent readers, skilled writers, and competent researchers.

About the lesson

Fundamental English skills:

• Homework
• Grammar
• Editing
• Organization
• Presentation
• Digital Publishing

90 Minute Sessions

ALTA tutors are available online to connect directly from your computer. We use video conferencing plus other collaborative tools to make a convenient and dynamic experience for our students.

Whether you are an emerging reader, a novice writer looking to learn basic skills, or if you’re wanting to develop advanced techniques, ALTA tutors are mindful about fostering growth no matter what your level. Alta students receive help with English homework, guided reading, prewriting, editing, and finding sources for projects.

ALTA tutors are carefully chosen for their educational backgrounds, professional experience, and enthusiasm for teaching. You can expect a friendly and attentive literacy coach to train you to thrive as an English student. All ALTA tutors undergo fingerprint-based background checks as processed by the State of California and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

ALTA sessions are scheduled thoughtfully at times that are convenient for busy high-school schedules in evenings and the weekend. Tutoring is scheduled year-round, accounting for holidays and school breaks, plus a special Summer Session too.

Unfortunately many students in the standard (and full) High School English classroom are not given the adequate attention from teachers. As an ALTA student, you will receive regular feedback on your work. Tutors take the time as editors to fine-tune your writing. Parents as well can expect periodic updates on student performance and areas for growth.

About Benjamin

My approach to teaching writing begins with an invitation to my students to consider themselves as authors. It is accessible to everyone. With consideration for my student’s identities— race, gender, sexuality, language and socioeconomic backgrounds, my pursuit is to cultivate personal, individual growth. We will learn effective, authorial techniques and develop publishing and presentation skills too.

I emphasize reading as essential. Good writers are merely passionate readers who are willing to put in time and effort to practice their craft. My students become proficient readers of fiction, nonfiction, and academic texts.

It is important to me that I understand the individual tastes and academic goals of my students. Unfortunately many students come to my classroom already convinced that their skills in English are insufficient and that their voices have no place in the conventional writing course. I want my students to reflect on the stories that they have lived, the interests that they are passionate about, and the degree and career pathways that they are are considering as launching points for their own writing. I want to develop their skills to create works that are useful to their progress as students and professionals in the real world.

I see my role as teacher as a guide— to help students encounter the writing that excites them and mentor them through discovering their own approach to composition. I also see myself as a model for the process of reading, research, and writing (learning in general). I give my students the opportunity to see me prewrite, organize, and research. I ask my students to question what they read and to make connections to their own lives. I use workshops where my students can watch me compose for a moment, implementing a practical writer’s technique.
