This is my first time tutoring, and I am excited to share music theory knowledge with you and show you how fun it is! I've come to understand from my peers that academic music theory classes can be a bit stale, so I will break things down in terms of real-world application, with plenty of examples. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing theory professor in community college, so I want to ensure that your experience is just as insightful and inspiring!
Music theory is like a giant puzzle, so I like to start with the very basics and later put them in context of the bigger picture. But of course, based on your level of knowledge, we can start at any point, or focus on any topic! The most important method I will employ is simply making sure you understand each topic before moving on to the next. Without a firm understanding of each element, the puzzle does not work as a whole. So I will break it down piece by piece and we will take it at whatever pace works best for you!
We will cover all sorts of material: notes, the staff and sheet music, reading music, chords, rhythms, scales, modes, textures, instrumentation, historical perspective, and most importantly, modern application of music theory. All of this will be accompanied by examples (and not just old, outdated compositions). When listening to a song, I like to find at least one specific element that "makes" the song. So we will study music that has emotional impact and figure out what makes any song work so well.
And if you want to just talk about audio production or even how music fits into the grand scheme of life, that's cool too!
I graduated from Oregon State University's Music program with a BA in audio production in 2017. During my time in school, I played trumpet in nearly every band program available to me, and eventually branched off into producing electronic music and composing for multimedia. I've played in a variety of bands outside of school ranging from rock to EDM to big band swing, and I actively work as a producer and composer.
Music theory was the most important (and most enjoyable) part of my music education. Because of that, I am proudly a huge theory nerd, and I look forward to sharing the importance of its study with the world. As musicians and as people in general, we all benefit from a knowledge of music theory. It is the magic formula behind all the greatest songs ever written, and is the source the strongest emotional reactions to music. It is what takes us beyond the mundane nature of regular life and gives significant meaning to the things we think, see, and do.
