About the lesson
I teach how to improvise or make up music spontaneously or compose without pencil and paper. I teach ear training so that you can learn a song just by listening to music. For some people, copying what they see me play is the fastest way that they learn. For others, reading my theory syllabus helps. Some people enjoy the mastering of the instrument, requiring them to practice scales and chords. Others, want to learn how to sight read, opening up the door to playing everything published. And still others enjoy reading chord symbols and melodies, while others want to compose their own music and need help with orchestration or music theory. Whatever your needs, I can help.

Michael breaks down step-by-step process on music theory. He makes it simple to understand & will continue to inspire his students to continue journey of learning about music & through this learn about oneself.
Michael is great! My son studied under another traditional teacher and he learned piano pieces and forgot them months later. He didn't have much fun, just memorizing pieces.
Michael teaches a different way. He encourages imagination and allows students to choose songs/pieces that he likes as well as breaking down practice pieces, that end up being complete songs. He teaches music theory. My son looks forward to the lessons much more than the previous teacher.
Eventually, my son will also learn guitar from Michael. It's not taking chances if you start or change to Michael as a music teacher!
-Charles J.I've been taking adult beginner jazz piano lessons with Michael for 8 months. 2 of those have been entirely online via zoom. I like him, and think the time and money I've spent with Michael have been worthwhile.
Michael's approach is centered around building deep musical intuition. He provides a binder-full of curriculum, containing a mixture of reference, exercises, and songs.
In a typical hour-long lesson, Michael will introduce a new concept (a progression, a scale, a mode, a song, etc) with about 45 minutes of discussion or demonstration and about 15 minutes of guided practice. He works to incorporate things I'm interested in. For instance, he's accommodated specific songs I want to play.
For moving to online lessons, Michael has a pretty good camera and microphone setup so you can see what he's doing at the piano. It's not as good as in-person lessons, but it beats not having lessons at all!
I play piano to relax, be in a creative space, and to entertain. Since I’ve started lessons with Michael the music I’m making is much more interesting and fun to play. I am always challenged and encouraged to have fun.
