About the lesson

Methodology & Techniques:

With my specialty being in mathematics, I strive to show students the "magic" of academics. My experience in tutoring for standardized tests under timed conditions, such as ACT & SAT, has taught me clever ways to solve seemingly difficult problems that allow students to better understand and be more comfortable with what they are learning. I call these techniques "math magic" because, too students, they just seem like a clever trick to find the solution to a problem. I then open up the curtain to the students to reveal why the clever trick works. This allows them to better comprehend concepts from a foundation standpoint.

Typical Lesson Plan:

Tutoring sessions are typically based on what the student is learning in his or her class at this moment. Students are told beforehand to come with any homework or notes they have on the topic they are being tutored on during that session. I will then look through the topic they are studying ask conceptual questions about it in order to analyze the student's scale of understanding.

If the student seems to need help in understanding, I will give a quick, easily understandable explanation on what is being learned. Once the student understands the topic conceptually, I will then show them the "magic" way to solve them.

I will then observe the examples given in the homework or notes and tweak them to make a different problems that follows the same concept learned. I will walk the student through the first problems step-by-step and gradually work towards himself or herself solving the problem independently while I solve the problem on the board. I would start this process by saying something such as "alright I know you clan do this one by yourself, you are getting really good at this. I'll solve the same problem on the board I will be a step ahead of you if you get stuck."

Once both the student and I have full confidence in his or her understanding of the subject both conceptually and in mathematical process, I will allow them to proceed onto their homework if they were assigned any for that topic. I will watch and check over work every five problems or so. If I see something incorrect I will give the student a push towards the right direction by reiterating a point in the topic that will help them find the correct solution. This give students confidence in working independently on topics they feel comfortable with conquering.

Math:

I am all about making math as smooth and easy as possible. I teach in the style of solving problems quickly and with clever techniques that let you solve seemingly hard problems in seconds. I love showing students the "magic" in math by teaching unique and efficient techniques that they are not typically taught in school.

I like to tell it how it is and explain topics in a way that is easily understandable to the student. I always call it "giving the run-down" as I explain the concepts with no scary big math words.

SAT & ACT:

I give tips and tricks to help students conquer these standardized tests with the potential to bring their scores up by 100 points or more. I will strive to give students comfortability under timed conditions by molding their thinking habits to be more accurate in absorbing information and more efficient in solving answers through quick techniques that appeal to these tricky timed conditions.

Reading and Literature:

I have read an abundance of literature usually taught in school numerous times. I will show you ways to find symbols, metaphors, and those hard-to-find hidden meanings in book. Whether it be a farm of talking animals or something written in that weird Shakespeare language. I will give students the confidence to structure well though out essays or answers, giving them the ability to knock any book report out of the park. If I have not read the book I vow to read it to ensure my assistance for the student

I hope to build confidence and enjoyment of academics in my students as they learn new, easier techniques and ways of conceptualizing topics in ways that are not particularly learned in school.
