I AM AN OLD-FASHIONED, HANDS ON, NO COMPUTERS, PIANO TEACHERS ... For EVERYONE: singing finger numbers first; singing letter names next; then counting the rhythm in a monotone. I use Schaum, Alfred, Bastien, Carl Fischer Music, Glover, Thompson, Hirschberg, et cetera, and will gladly work in whatever books the student currently is involved in, and if they like them, I will continue in them. I will gently introduce the written homework: Note-spellers, Rhythm-spellers, Chord-builders, Theory lessons. Learning the WRITTEN. To go into the eyeballs and come out the fingers is more important to me than mimicry. I also have them learn manual dexterity muscle memory via the dreaded finger drills and scales. It works! ... ... I am 65 yrs old new to North Miami, FL (from Long Island, NY) and have to rebuild my successful business. I can teach ANYONE how to play piano on ANY baby toy keyboard/piano. No sense in investing in an expensive instrument if you don't like it taking lessons. It's a discipline, not for everyone. But if you desire, we can give you the opportunity.
M.Mus.Ed. , B.S Therapeutic Recreation , A.A.S. Music Performance ... retired, relocated from Long Island, NY ... public school substitute & private piano teacher ... over 25 years taught 1,000 students . One joined the U.S.Army Band, another is a piano teacher, another went on to Broadway, I even heard one gal as the piped-in music in some upscale restaurant.
A child's attention span is NOT an hour. If you want to count from the split second I walk in the door until the split second I walk out. Then possibly an hour does elapse. I usually charge the $35 for the lesson which lasts the HALF HOUR of focusing at the keyboard.
