I keep the student front and center. Not all approaches work for everyone so I carefully evaluate the student's progress by constantly taking into account her strengths, affinities, goals, and skills. Students laugh a lot in my classes but they always finish my courses impressing their friends and families. You'll learn more than just English with me.
I'm an expat and serial entrepreneur whose lived, worked, and created businesses on three continents. From a tour company in Buenos Aires to a language school in Prague, wherever I go, I create something new. I'm also a lifelong film student, an avid reader, a published poet and writer, a fan of street art and photography, and a pretty good cook.
I founded Long Takes in Prague as a way to help local university students become better film critics writing in English. It was run as a co-op. The Czech Republic is full of cinephiles and film students who want to share their ideas. English film criticism has a greater reach than any other language so my own vocations and background in film made it a natural and fun endeavour. I also blogged about a million words about my adventures in the Golden City. At the height of its popularity, my blog was getting over 2000 individual visitors per day. Not bad for the early days of blogging.
I created the San Telmo Art & History Walk while living and blogging out of a street-art-festooned hostel in Buenos Aires' oldest and most bohemian barrio. I eventually expanded the tour and hired more guides. Together we created the La Boca Walk and the San Telmo Beer Bust. I eventually sold the tours to another company for a lot more than I ever put into it.
My blog for Art Factory Hostel won an award as one of the best English-language blogs in South America.
Eventually my love for street art and contemporary art in Buenos Aires led me to found Juanele AR, a unique and unprecedented non-profit arts organization that promoted Argentine art locally and internationally. Among other things, like sponsorships, grants, and events, we blogged daily about the art scenes in both English and Spanish, something that had never been done before or since.
I also created several successful Tex-Mex pop-up dinners in Buenos Aires. Their popularity eventually allowed me to open up my own kitchen in a craft beer bar in San Telmo.
I left Argentina for Mexico in 2019. In Mexico City, I recently founded another language school, this time online. We're small but we're growing.
I have a degree in Cinema & Photography from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
