PhD in CS and university lecturer: expert in C, C++, math, algorithms, automata, cryptography, artificial intelligence in Las Vegas

Methodology

I am really into educating in general, whether it’s writing, tutoring, or teaching. I have done one-on-one tutoring, online tutoring, and drop-in tutoring as well as leading supplemental instruction sessions. I’ve been the student, I’ve been the tutor, and I’ve been the (sometimes difficult) teacher. :)

I’ve been in charge of various outreach programs for middle and high school students and have won several service awards. In 2018 I presented Active Learning via Flipped Classroom Techniques in STEM Courses at the Intermountain Teaching for Learning Conference, so I’m not just interested in computer science but also figuring out more effective teaching methodologies. I love figuring out the gaps in people's knowledge and then how to both fill those gaps and encourage students to attain a deeper level of understanding through a variety of methods.

Background

I have B.Sc. (highest honors), M.Eng. (highest honors), and Ph.D. (4.0 GPA) degrees in computer science & engineering. I've been teaching and tutoring for 20 years in computer science, computer programming, and other subjects such as calculus, differential equations, logic design, and physics. I've been a full time university lecturer and taught over 20 semester-long courses including C, C++, Java, data structures, file systems, and design of operating systems.

I’d consider myself an expert and qualified to teach and tutor most undergraduate and many graduate computer science and math courses including algorithms, automata theory, artificial intelligence, and cryptography. I’m a member of Mensa, I’ve written a textbook on C programming, I am a former USAD national mathematics champion, and I was an intern for the Navy where I held a (now inactive) DOD secret security clearance.
