About Joseph
I am a paleontologist, biologist, and isotope chemist with 32 years of field, research, and teaching experience. I have worked with NASA, the Mayo Clinic, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Arizona State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. My main area of expertise is organismal biology broadly defined to include phylogenetics, evolution, comparative anatomy, and whole-organism isotope chemistry. My teaching experience ranges from giving informal small group and one-on-one lessons in paleontological techniques, through teaching traditional laboratory classes, to designing and teaching high enrollment online classes on dinosaurs and the history of paleontology.

Science is not a collection of facts but a way of discovering facts. I believe strongly that this distinction should be reflected in science education, the primary goal of which should be teaching scientific concepts and scientific reasoning. Although important, teaching facts is secondary. Learning facts without understanding why they are facts is a hollow achievement. Take for example the statement “birds are dinosaurs.” To the best of our knowledge this is a true statement, but why? The answer lies in phylogenetic reasoning, a system of logical analysis developed over the past century that has put the classification of organisms on a solid evolutionary footing. In my classes I teach phylogenetic reasoning, and use “birds are dinosaurs” and similar statements as illustrations of how phylogenetic reasoning works. Many other areas of biology lend themselves to conceptual teaching. What, for example, are the physiological problems that must be solved when aquatic animals evolve into land animals, or vice versa? The “who” of this story is less important than the “how.” A few Latin names will answer the former, while answering the latter requires understanding a range of physiological issues that confront any lineage moving between water and land.
