You make me believe that I am more than what school tells me I am, a student once wrote to me in angular, slanting handwriting.
Although he has long since graduated, his words have remained with me, having wormed themselves into the marrow of my bones. They have impacted my practice as a teacher more profoundly than two Ivy League educations, an entire bookshelf on dialogical practice, and every professional development workshop I've ever led or taken.
You make me believe that I am more than what school tells me I am.
To me, this is a challenge as much as it is an accolade. It reminds me from the inside out that when I climb the stairs to G112, I get to view the world with two lenses --this is what is; but this is what could be. More importantly, though, as a teacher, it is my duty and privilege to find ways to share this (re)vision with my students.
