About Katie

Hi everyone! My name is Kathryn Epstein and I’m a junior political science major at Binghamton University. With two author parents, I’ve been lucky enough to grow into a comfortable and effective writer. After completing 4 AP courses in NYC public schools (AP Literature, AP English Language, AP Environmental Science and AP U.S. History) and receiving exam scores between 3-4, I completed a Speech and Debate program at Binghamton U. There I worked in an academic setting to gather data and participate in college level debates, including the collection of data from research papers. I received the best speaker/debater reward out of 20 students and applied my abilities as a creative writer to my academic writing abilities. I’m looking to work with students who want to strengthen their writings impact, become more intuitive in their arguments and argue effectively without crowding their papers with unneeded words. I’m also a very experienced babysitter, so I’m more than comfortable working with students of all ages and backgrounds.

About the lesson

When working on an essay with friends or students, I first ask them what they really mean to say. I find that most authors know their literary goal, but have a firm thesis with effective evidence, but get lost in translation. I also am a firm believer in essay planning! Once we have organized our evidence, your arguments and how they connect, Ill help you tackle the daunting task of introductions (spoiler: I do not recommend writing them first!), transitions, quotation placement and ensure all these pieces fit together in a way that makes your voice as clear as possible. I also promise to be patient, respectful (ex: of pronouns, preferences and any accommodations you may need to learn comfortably) and kind. Let’s squash your essay anxiety and get you a good grade!
