I am most experienced working with students through 6th grade in reading, writing, and/or math. I have worked with middle and high school students as well, and am happy to take on older students who have an interest in my teaching methods.
My approach in any given subject it to find out where a student last truly and fully understood their material and to go from there. By finding the last part the student could fully understand and apply, we can take each next step, little by little, and ensure each part after that is fully grasped. In this way we catch and handle any areas of confusion and fully sort them out before continuing onto the next (and slightly more difficult) part. As we hit areas that need to be sorted out, I make sure that once a student does understand the data, we practice the concept as much as is needed that it becomes easy for them to work with.
In teaching reading and phonics, I find that it is quite important to practice the sounds, words or books being worked on many times, to ensure they become easy for the child to see and work with.
I love getting to know the students I am working with, and finding out about their own unique personalities, interests and goals. This is wonderful for relationship-building, which make lessons way more fun all around, and it is great for preparing individual lessons when needed. Many students, especially those who aren't as interested in a certain academic subject, will become more enthusiastic when the lessons are tailored to their interests!
I truly enjoy helping children reach their fullest potential, and know that often a child just needs a little extra one-on-one attention and help to get there!
I have experience working with children of all ages, but especially relevant to tutoring is the two years I worked in an elementary school. I lead classes for Pre-K through 6th grade helping students build strong foundations in math and language arts, as well as individually working with children who needed extra attention to catch up academically in these areas. I created individual programs and helped these students win at learning!
I have also been a Preschool Director, volunteered in a youth tutoring program, and have nanny experience.
I absolutely love working with children, getting to know their unique personalities, and helping them with academic, social and life-long success!
If I travel more than 10 miles to get to you, I will add $3.00 to the visit for travelling. I am happy to meet at your house, or in a local library.
