About Kayla

Hello! My name is Kayla! I’m an African American dancer and dance educator from the East Coast. I am ecstatic with the possibility of being your dance teacher! Dance is my passion and I have dedicated my life to it. I have been dancing for over 18+ years and during that time I have gained experience educating and performing. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Dance and Psychology, I have trained in dance styles such as: Hip-Hop, Modern, Tap, Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, and Improvisation. While specializing in Narrative dance and Urban Contemporary. I am a member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), as well as, a member of an Urban Contemporary Dance Company.

Whether you have been dancing for 10+ years or 5 minutes; I create fun and engaging lesson plans catered to your skill level. My lessons are about exploring new movement within your own body, imagination, and creativity within dance. Students will set and strive to achieve individualized goals throughout the lessons, emphasizing expanding their technique and skills within dance.

Any student interested in improving their overall dance skills will be encouraged to participate in my lessons. The program will complete a well-rounded curriculum that already includes the National Dance Education Organization’s learning standards.

My 8 year old daughter expressed an interest in dance just before the Pandemic began. When the world shut down, it was really hard for us to bring her to understand why she needed to wait a while longer to start her dance journey. It was truly a blessing to find Kayla, and be presented with an online option. Kayla was professional, she drafted a contract and was very competitive with her pricing. She worked beautifully with our daughter, patiently teaching her the basics of ballet. She had no prior training or knowledge of terms for the positions and moves. Kayla was able to instruct her, virtually, making corrections and suggestions based on her observations of my daughters movements. It was amazing to watch her confidence and passion for dance flourish so quickly! My daughter met with Kayla every other week for several months, and all of the classes were recorded and forwarded to us by Kayla. This allowed our daughter the opportunity to practice the skills and techniques covered during class, until the next lesson. I strongly recommend Kayla as a trustworthy, capable and amazing Dance Instructor! Her love for dance shines through her instruction and she has really ignited the dancer in my daughter!

What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.
I started dancing at the age of 4. My mom said I had a lot of energy and wanted me to channel it into something that would benefit me in the long run.
What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?
My all time favorite sport is dance. However, I ran track and played volleyball. I was on both varsity teams in high school and ran track at a collegiate level.
What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?
What gives me the motivation and passion to pursue dance is the emotion and emotional release that goes into dance. Being able to help others connect to their own emotions and express that through movement. Also helping others achieve their movement goals.
Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?
Graduating with honors in dance from my university and receiving recognition from the National Honors Society of Dance Academics.
How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?
My achievements and challenges have made me a better dancer because they have pushed me to want more for myself, they have helped me embrace mine and other's differences, and helped e to never give up on myself.
If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?
If I had the opportunity to go on a job with a famous athlete it would be, Josephine Baker. I would ask her about her experience as a dancer and choreographer. What was her motivation?
How do you help people stay motivated?
I help people stay motivated by, helping them look inwards. External satisfaction is great. However one isn't truly satisfied until they are happy with themselves on the inside.
What makes you a Superprof in sports?
What makes me a SuperProfessor in Dance are my degrees and experience. With two degrees in both psychology and dance, with honors in dance. My membership in the National Dance Educators Association and I am a part of a dance company in New York City! I don't only value technique but fun as well! And I believe that makes my classes more enjoyable.
