About the lesson
For complete beginners on the oboe, I usually start with long tones to build up stamina, improve on breath control and help develop correct embouchure. Scales and arpeggios are also a common feature of my lessons as these are the fundamental building blocks of music and oboe playing. Scales are very important help the student to remember the fingerings of different notes and help improve sound and finger technique as well.
For intermediate students, I do all the above but focus more on the repertoire that they are currently working on for an upcoming assessment or performance. I usually spend more time on musicality - developing the student's stylistic ideas on different periods of music and also other aspects of technique such as articulation and dynamics.

I studied oboe performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 2017 with a Distinction for my Masters of Music degree. I then went on to do an Artist Diploma in Oboe Performance, again at Guildhall, and attained a Distinction in 2020.
As a recitalist, I have played in venues such as the Wigmore Hall and Milton Court Concert Hall, and as an orchestral musician have played with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. I gave my concerto debut with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2016, performing Richard Strauss' oboe concerto.
Apart from performing, I also have a great passion for teaching. To date I have over eight years of experience teaching both privately and in schools. All of my students who have taken ABRSM examinations have attained either a Distinction or a Merit and a couple of them are also seriously considering pursuing music in Conservatory. I currently also teach the oboe at Havering Music Centre on Saturday mornings. I build rapport with my students and take great pride in watching them make progress and grow as a musician.
My students range from 7 to 60 years old, with some learning the oboe to take graded examinations and others learning the instrument as a hobby. Over time, I have gained significant experience in helping students of different ages and standards overcome technical difficulties, thereby significantly improving their playing. Whatever your goals are, rest assured I will tailor the lessons to suit you best.
Perfect! Bernice is the best oboe teacher we have had so far. She is professional and patient. She conducts every lesson in a very structural way. Although it's only been a little over 2 months since my daughter started learning oboe with Bernice, my daughter has improved noticeably.
We highly recommend Bernice.

Bernice plays the oboe beautifully, moving her audience with wondrous tones and exquisite techniques. And she's a master at conveying clearly and demonstrating superbly what she does so well with her oboe to her students.
I have been doing oboe since year 4 and Bernice helped me get into grade 6 in the space of two years. She is so kind and supportive and I completely recommend her.
I have witnessed Bernice teaching first hand and would say her attention to detail while remaining calm encouraging and supportive of her pupils are essential qualities. Watching her online performances leaves no one in any doubt as to her abilities.
I would recommend her to anyone of any level.

As a freelancer, I am generally quite flexible with my schedule so if a student needs to change the date or time of lesson, I am usually able to do so to accommodate my student's timetable. However, I require at least 24 hours notice beforehand, otherwise the full hour's lesson will still be charged.
For lessons that take place online or at my house, the lesson fee is £42/hour.
For London-based students who prefer having face-to-face lessons at their own house, the lesson fee is £42/hour with an additional travel cost of £8.
