Professional Violist with several years of teaching experience giving violin, viola, and recorder lessons

I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced violin, viola, and recorder students. Beginning students learn good playing position with both the right and left hands through the use of exercises. They can use any method although I am most familiar with the Suzuki and Essential Elements books. For a beginning violin or viola student, I demonstrate how to hold the bow with a pencil and will ensure that they master a bow hold using a pencil before actually holding the bow. Intermediate and advanced violin and viola students will often tell me what music they are working on, and I will give them fingerings and help them with concepts such as intonation, rhythm, bow distribution, and good sound. I reinforce good playing position and encourage them to practice using the metronome. I encourage all of my students to practice scales in order to help their intonation. I help recorder students by teaching them how to cover each hole correctly, give them breathing exercises, and demonstrate how much and what type of air is needed to make a good sound on each note, especially the low notes.

Amy serves as section violist in the San Antonio Symphony, substitute violist with the Chicago Symphony and Fort Worth Symphony, and has been a member of the Austin Symphony, New World Symphony, and Ann Arbor Symphony. She has participated in the Vermont Mozart Festival, YOA Orchestra of the Americas, Aspen Music Festival and American Academy of Conducting Orchestras, National Repertory Orchestra, Chautauqua Music Festival, New York String Orchestra Seminar, and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She received her BM viola degree with highest honors from the University of Michigan where she studied with Professor Yizhak Schotten.

Amy was first place winner of the American Viola Society 2014–15 Orchestral Excerpts Competition, has received a Farwell Trust award from the Musicians Club of Women (Chicago), and was a finalist in the NFAA/YoungArts program.

Amy is also an accomplished recorder player. She was featured as recorder soloist with flutist Mary Stolper in Telemann’s Concerto for Recorder and Flute with Chicago’s Music of the Baroque under the direction of Maestro Nicholas Kraemer. In 2011, Amy presented the United States premiere of Sir Malcolm Arnold’s Recorder Concerto with the I’Solisti Chamber Orchestra. Amy has also served as recorder player with the New World Symphony in performances of Water Music by Telemann and Handel.

Amy has appeared as violin, viola, and recorder soloist with several Illinois orchestras and most recently as viola soloist in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the Vermont Mozart Festival.
