The core of my philosophy is that all students can succeed at speech and debate. Therefore, I meet my students where they are at and consistently help them reach their goals. Because every student is different, we will develop a preliminary action plan in our first sessions based on their specific goals. Whether those are short-term, like preparation for an upcoming event or more long-term each student will make progress. Progress will be monitored are regularly communicated to students and parents (if applicable).
Tutoring sessions for debate and public speaking events focus primarily on tournament prep, doing drills/practice targeted at specific skills, case/speech construction, and develop strong and ethical research practices. The exact tutoring sessions will look different depending on short and long-term goals.
I have been coaching competitive high school debate and public speaking for 17 years and teaching it in a classroom setting for 12 of those years at some of the most successful programs. I've also taught middle and primary school students.
My students have championed or been in late elimination rounds at TOC Bid Tournaments, the Tournament of Champions, NSDA Nationals, the TFA, and UIL State Tournaments in Policy (CX), Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum, Extemporaneous speaking, World Schools, and Congressional Debate. My tutoring students have gone from not breaking at tournaments to being consistent out-rounds participants at every level, including being the TOC bid leader 2020.
