I start with the understanding of what each letter represents. Then we work on the sounds that the letters stand for, after this I move on to teaching the reading of short words. After the student can read 3-4 short words, we work on sentences. Then we move into books. I work with the student to find out where they are at in the process. Then we can move on from there. I don't move on until we have accomplished the skill successfully.
I am patient with students and will keep returning to past lessons to make sure the skill is still working for the student. I try hard to make the lessons about what the student is interested in and keep the lessons varied so they don't get long and drawn out. I will also have the student write so that they can have a chance to read something they wrote. This encourages the student and they will want to learn more.
I have been a teacher for over 7 years and I have tutored for about a year. I have taught from 1 to 25 students at a time. My students have mostly been of Kindergarten age and have started in August and by December they know their sounds, letters and can read small books. Usually by the end of the year they have progressed to reading 1st grade books. I look for books that they enjoy and will have fun reading.
I also have them create their own books for their friends. We learn about characters, setting and how to illustrate our books and have a middle with a nice ending.
I have a Masters in Education and an ongoing love of reading and writing.
