I fully abide by the approach that mathematics is designed to make sense. A student will never learn the mathematics by memorizing the algorithmic solutions to various sets of problems. The first, and most important moment is to understand "Why". Only then can one attempt to even begin solving a problem.
Math is like the game of chess. At its highest levels the concepts are still simple, but it is finding the correct approach that proves difficult.
I've been giving lessons on the side of school/work for about 3 years now.
I've taught about a half dozen students over this short tenure. Many students had received increased examination grades by full letter grades, or even multiple point jumps in their math ACT scores.
