I believe learning is interactive. In order to understand chemistry or math you must engage with it. In order for the engagement to be successful it must be meaningful. This often involves small group work. I find that the interaction with others in the same situation exponentially increases everyone's understanding. I believe in a lot of practice that is initially guided but progresses to doing it yourself with later expert review. I also believe in using one-question quizzes to reflect on the material as it is encountered and self-assess your level of current understanding.
Taught both high school and college chemistry, (first year and Organic) for over 35 years; and taught high school math for three years. Have tutored several individuals in math and chemistry for several years as well. Students I have tutored have gone from near failing grades to B or higher.
