About James

I have a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from New College in Florida and an M.A., M.Phil. and PhD in Religious Studies from Yale, as well as a life-long interest in history, literature, and psychology. My focus has always been on understanding the meaning of life. After teaching for over a quarter of a century, I retired in 2014 and now live in the country with my wife and three daughters in addition to a dog, three cats, two goats and seven chickens.

I don't have a set approach, but will tailor the lessons to your needs. If you are having trouble with a particular text, I will go over it with you and explain in simple terms what the author is saying, and then go over it again until you can see the meaning for yourself. If you are studying a historical period or a religious tradition and are overwhelmed by all the details, I will help you find patterns that give meaning to the facts and make them easy to remember. Whatever the object of your study, I will use my proven ability to hold the attention of students in three-hour classes without the use of notes to help you understand it from the inside out. By the way, I am also ready and willing to do simple editing of writing assignments if that is what you need.
