My belief is that you must first establish a trusting relationship with the student/students in order to have a successful learning environment! The student must feel safe in order to truly have an active role in his/her learning. After that, I teach diagnostically, using a variety of pretest to determine needed instruction. In addition I do a lot of informal checks to determine if we have the right plan or if it needs to be modified. I use a lot of positive reinforcement realizing building confidence is a key to future success. Lastly, I involve parents giving them feedback and I also want their input if they would like to see changes.
I was a teacher and administrator for years. Part of my job was to work with students to determine interventions specifically for them to help the be successful. I am very proud of the accomplishments we were able to achieve together!
If I need to purchase additional materials the cost would go up some, or the parent could purchase the materials. They would be very specific to a student's needs.
One of my most valued experiences with teacher was creating a class for all 6th graders reading below benchmark. There were 63 students total and I split them into 3 classes. There was a lot of pretesting, diagnostic teaching filling in missing scope and sequencing for each student individually, preloading vocabulary from other content areas, and lots of practicing without consequences, only chances to improve. By the end of the year all the students showed at least two years growth and several grew as much as four years. I tracked these students through their 12th grade year. Ten of them were recommended for honors English for 9th grade and all the ones that stayed in the district went on to graduate! It was a wonderful accomplishment for all of us!
