Rewrite Your Future With The English Language (I'll Show You The Way)

Methodology

See above. I hope my personality and the crux of my unusual approach is clear. To reiterate: "I have proud experience working with multilingual students from multiple countries in six continents. Looking for a complex claim? I'm your man. I'm on it."

Background

am a PhD in English from the University of Washington. I’ve got more than ten years’ experience as a teacher and tutor, teaching a variety of writing-related classes and tutored in three states (as well as in Morocco). I’m very proud to say that I’ve got roughly 1000 former students running around the world who will recommend me for my unorthodox style, which involves lots of gently prodding students to find “the big picture” in their work through the application of critical thinking and research. I also have proud experience working with multilingual students from multiple countries in six continents.

So let’s say you’re an undergrad looking for a complex claim for your research paper in an English 100 course. I will help you find it. Say you’re looking to actually understand the use of a particular punctuation symbol, rather than having to look that s**t up every single time you do a paper. I’m your man. Say you’re trying to decide on a major, write a statement of purpose, a resume, any such matter; I’m on it. Let’s say you’re a grad student seeking a generalist scholarly view on your work, rather than a perspective from someone in your narrow discipline...you get the idea. I’ll even work with you under extraordinary circumstances at the end of the quarter/semester or midterms, if that helps.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
The University of Washington Seattle, WA
Teaching Assistant in the Expository Writing Program 2012-2020
As instructor of English 281, English 131 and English 109-110 (the final a sequenced course specifically for Educational Opportunity Program students): Generated courses to enable students to fulfill the EWP’s “four outcomes” through extensive portfolios. Focused classroom content on the synthesis of widely variant texts, culminating in risk-taking, complex claim-rooted research papers. In English 281, designed courses to encourage students to embrace an “ecological” approach to composition and rhetoric, including elements of popular culture, deconstruction, political, and/or Seattle-specific inquiry.
Placed emphasis on educational concepts such as intertextuality, pedagogical memory, metacognition, and Knowledge Transfer.
Worked with students of diverse backgrounds and perspectives (a large percentage of students were “international” and/or students of color).

Ibn Zohr University Agadir, Morocco
Instructor August-September 2014
Facilitated undergraduates as they advanced from core fluency in English to applied socialization. Students increased rhetorical genre awareness and ability to handle “difficult rhetors.”
Lesson plans included tasks from close reading, to idiom comprehension, to playacting.

Durham Technical Community College Durham, NC
Adjunct English Instructor August 2010-December 2011
Initiated and taught English 111 and 112 at Durham Tech. Approach was designed to answer the expectations of both Durham Tech and my students (whose needs were quite diverse). To achieve this result, blended a participatory classroom setting, acting as facilitator and co-learner as well as conventional instructor, with a determination to work with students outside of the classroom.
Philosophical emphasis on the written realization of critical thinking.
Texts varied; writing-in-the-disciplines, quizzes, and literature (short story) were components of the curriculum.

WCU English Department Cullowhee, NC
Freshman Composition Instructor/GA Fall 2009
Initiated and taught a course designed to heighten student awareness of author/audience subjectivities, critical thinking, and service. Classroom model combined Freire’s Liberation Model with a small-group, collaborative element. Students were exposed to material varying from classic essays to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Held regular conferences with students; classroom emphasis was on universal participation.

New Mexico Highlands University English Dept. Las Vegas, NM

Writing Center and Tutoring Experience
WCU Academic Success Program Cullowhee, NC
Instructor & Tutor Summer 2008

New Mexico Highlands University Writing Center Las Vegas, NM
Tutor and Administrative Assistant/GA Fall 2006-Spring 2007
Provided guidance for students, including arrival upon topics, content and structure, and mechanical guidance and feedback.
Responsibilities included numerous regular appointments with ESL students, typically MBA candidates requiring assistance with understanding challenging English registers (E.G.: Supreme Court briefs).
Amicably greeting and scheduling students, as well as organizing tutorial schedules and interpreting Writing Center usage data.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH
As rhetorician: Understanding and confronting dichotomous language as an obstacle to conflict resolution (planned dissertation on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict)
As compositionist: Knowledge Transfer-related concerns, including engaging dissenters
As creative writer: Published and interested in teaching all genres
As pop culturalist: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Wire, and professional wrestling, all discussions serving as a means of describing marginalized communities of cultural production.
