I am friendly, patient, and easy-going. I take sessions at a relaxed and comfortable pace so students don't feel nervous and pressured. I joke around a little bit and get to know students and build a bit of a relationship before just jumping in and getting more serious about the subject material. But there's plenty of time to get things done. If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner.
On the other hand, you might say, "It SOUNDS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! SOUNDS. Maybe you're an auditory learner and like to hear things explained clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. Maybe you need to just jump in and work a problem or two with me step-by-step and discover the PATTERN of what's going on and pick up the FEEL of it.
See, I understand. Listen, I understand. If you feel what I'm saying, I get it. I know how to get the point across based on how you learn. I understand what it feels like not to understand a subject very well. In fact, I wasn't good at math in high school. It wasn't until college that I got a really outstanding teacher who knew how to teach so that everyone who went to class and did their homework (like they should) understoodâŠand from then on, math was easy for me. And now things are about to get easier for you, too. When a tutor first meets a student, the tutor has to estimate the student's background knowledge of a subject.
Don't worry. I will very quickly have a feel for what you know and what you don'tâŠand what you urgently need to know. Bring everything to your first session so I can get a snapshot or a feel for how your instructor determines your grades: textbook, laptop computer, and notebook (notes, homework, QUIZZES and TESTS especially, labs, and projects), and materials you ordinarily need (calculator, ruler, protractor, compass, colored pencils).
I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. For the last 23 years, it has been so fulfilling working for three colleges and tutoring independently over 1,000 students of all ages in all areas of math and computer science, as well as college writing, adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science and am internationally-certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. I love tutoring more every year I do it.

The Origins and Roots of Modern Mathematical Terms: An Etymological Survey
Presentation explored the Greek, Latin, and Indo-European etymons (Greek: true origins) of various modern English mathematical terms, with a smattering of history paralleling the linguistic developments.
I have known Mike Adams for over 4 years, first as a fellow classmate in a business class at Virginia Western and then as a friend. He is an active tutor at my local college, focusing on math and writing. Mike's excellent teaching strategies have made several students successful in their courses including ones I have been in. He also has spent time mentoring new students and prospective leaders to see their true potential not just academically but professionally and spiritually as well. Mike has done extensive computer work. Â He has designed and built computers, installed replacement components, configured networks and many other services. He is also adept at troubleshooting various software problems. I believe Mike's skills fit superbly well in what is expected of a tutor.
Sincerely,
Ben Corbett
Mike and I crossed paths one weekend. We talked about ourselves and I mentioned I wanted to go back to school. College was something I feared. Mike supported me with his wisdom of school. With his encouragement and many blessings I will be going to college full-time in the fall of 2018. He also told me that he was willing to support me along this journey the best he could. Mike is a good man and friend who truly cares about others. His selfless drive to help others succeed is what will help him succeed and accomplish his goals, dreams and aspirations. Thanks again, Mike.
Mike's trustworthiness as a tutor can be best described by the level of accountability he exudes for his students. During the time I was tutored by him, Mike took extra time to understand my learning habits and helped me develop specific strategies that enhanced my learning of the course I was taking. Mike helped me understand that different academic subjects require different learning approaches be taken to achieve success. Mike revealed learning techniques that helped me adapt to the demands of the course I was taking. I could always depend on him to be extremely flexible with the time he spent helping me. I could always count on Mike to respond to phone calls as well as emails in a very timely manner. Students will find they can trust Mike to take the time to understand exactly what they need and teach them how to apply personalized learning strategies that lead to academic success.
Mike is an amazingly caring and trustworthy person. He goes out of his way to do things for others and is always willing to help. He is easy going and laid back which makes for an excellent tutor. Mike puts students at ease and makes them comfortable to ask any question. He is incredibly brilliant. I have always thought it takes true superior intelligence to be able to break down complicated subjects in an easy way and make them understandable for others. He brings this skill to life. He is a great communicator and all around quality person. I have no hesitation recommending him as a teacher.
Great tutor, makes learning easy, takes time to explain, and is willing to go the extra mile so that you can excel on your educational journey. I was an older returning student who had literally been out of school for almost 20 years. I needed math to graduate and was totally lost. Michael made learning fun and helped me understand in a way that I thought was impossible. I not only graduated with a 3.7 GPA, I'm now pursuing my Master's degree thanks to him. I recommend his expertise to all!

He is great to work with.
He is great! He helped my husband when he needed help with his papers. Super nice and explains things to where its easily understood. Has fun so learning is fun not boring.
Micheal was my tutor at Virginia Western Community College for the Spring Semester of 2018. I can not recommend him enough. To begin with, he is an amazing person, he has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met. He genuinely cares about every single student he helps and remembers everyone one of their names. I was struggling in a pre-calc course. When I say struggling, I was on the verge of failing. I started meeting him around the middle of the semester. We met almost everyday, some days 6 hours and some days 3. I needed the semester with a high C almost a B! It was my hard work and dedication and his hard work and dedication that made me succeed. MIKE IS AMAZING!
He was my calculus tutor in VWCC. He is a very knowledgeable nice and patient guy. Never gets tired of explaining math problems. If I didnât understand the concept, he used different methods to get me involved. I highly recommend him
