I can assist with lessons in science and mathematics at all levels from elementary through high school and also college undergraduate. I can also assist with persuasive writing and speaking and writing on technical topics. I support an active learning approach that engages students directly in the topic of instruction and assists them building a foundation on which to construct an in-depth understanding of the content. I prefer to use a question and answer or discussion format to promote understanding. I approach teaching as a facilitator of learning, providing resources and prompts to actively involve my students in learning.
I have been teaching science and the associated mathematics since the 1980s. My focus has been on the physical sciences, especially physics and chemistry. I have been a science educator at the college level since the late 1990s, teaching science methods, as well as general education classes. I have worked mainly with high school level students and undergraduates; however, I have also worked with teachers at the elementary level, assisting them with teaching methods for science and mathematics. I also have a journalism degree and have engaged in reporting on science and technical topics. I have worked on science and technology curricular projects supported by state and national education standards. I have mainly taught classes of students at the elementary, middle, high school, and college level. My pre-college students have gone on to study science and technology at the college level and my college students have become elementary teachers and middle and high school science teachers.
I offer a 20% reduction for working with elementary level students and 10% reduction for working with high school students.
I have an undergraduate degree (BA) in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, where I also studied the history and philosophy of science and persuasive writing. I attended secondary education courses at San Francisco State University to obtain my teaching credential in physical sciences and I taught physics and chemistry at a magnet high school in San Francisco. I entered a graduate program at the University of Illinois where I received a Master's Degree in Journalism with a focus on science reporting and where I also wrote articles for the Supercomputing Center. I continued my education at the University of Illinois, obtaining a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Science Education. After that, I entered a doctoral program at the University of Florida where I obtained my Education Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Science and Technology Education. While at the University of Florida, I worked on educational technology projects and science curriculum projects, one of which was the focus of my dissertation. I took additional science courses throughout my graduate education to expand my understanding in both the life and physical sciences. I have taken additional science courses at the graduate level, focusing on astronomy and physics.
