When I teach, I always begin with where my student(s) is (are) and then, with the educational and performance goals of the student(s) in mind, develop a strategy and a curriculum to best help my student(s) attain his or her goals while enjoying the process as much as possible. Even with music’s most “academic” subjects I believe the process of learning can be fun — even exciting — as new concepts are mastered and richer historical context is understood.
I am a retired church musician with 35 years experience writing, arranging, teaching, conducting, playing, and singing in a wide range of styles for a great variety of instruments and voices. I hold a Bachelor of Music Education degree in Choral Music and a Master of Music in Musicology degree. I have taught at all levels and especially enjoy teaching music history and theory to advanced students. During my graduate college years I served as a graduate teaching assistant in musicology for six semesters. I have sung with professional choirs. I very much like to share my experience and my passion for music with anyone and everyone.
