There is more than one methodology suited to the student based on his/her level of advancement and ability to learn. I place myself in the students' situation, watch and react to his/her comprehension moving as fast as the student can apply the material I present. The methodology I learned as a math student is the one I use. Use the least amount of steps to get answers thereby eliminating steps that can cause errors. Simplify and make sure the student does not learn by rote but by understanding why the steps are necessary.
I have a BA in Political Science and a MA in Communication (very helpful in the teaching process). I am retired from a career in the computer field. I am a published author, theater director, TV producer and screenwriter. Students react very positively to me because they know how much I care. And I speak French!
