As a reading tutor, I believe that reading should, above all, be pleasurable. In my experience, having casual conversions about books keeps kids more engaged than imposing reading logs of study questions. As a writing instructor, I like to lead with what does and doesn't "work" about a piece - that is, what the student is trying to convey and how successfully they are doing so - rather than adhering to strict guidelines about form or structure.
I am a writer in Burlington, VT with many years of experience in creative and academic writing. As a former assistant in the publishing industry, I developed extensive editing skills and can help any student make the writing the best it can be. During my time at Smith College, I worked as a reading comprehension tutor for students of all ages at disadvantaged public schools, received awards for my academic writing, and completed coursework in creative writing. I scored 2250 (out of 2400) on the SAT and am qualified to help with test prep of any kind.
