I have worked with students from 2nd through 12th grade. My initial approach to any child is to introduce myself and then observe them. Observation of their behavior is an effective way to best communicate to each child, to understand their needs. Some children learn best through art or working only on a computer. Some work better with quiet classical music playing in the room.
When a child has a behavioral issue, I'll sit quietly until my presence arouses their curiosity. One such 3rd grade child was disrupting the classroom. He sat down next to me and the first thing I asked him was "did you eat today?" He hadn't. This action allowed me to find out more about his home life. This knowledge dictated my approach to working with him.
I have given lessons to 9 students on the spectrum individually and up to 20 in a classroom I've tutored both in my school and at their home. Two of my high school autism students graduated with Regent's diplomas from New York State and went on to 2-year college. My other individual students were in lower grades when I worked with them.
