First, I explain that Algebra is simply a streamlined method of finding / graphing the value(s) of a variable(s) in an algebraic expression(s). The goal of an ahebraic equation is to do the opposite operation of all of the numbers that are in the way, putting them on the other side of the equal sign '=', in order to get the unknown variable all by itself on the opposite side of the equal '=' sign. Then, I inquire about what algebraic expression each student is having difficulty solving. I have a simplistic approach of demonstrating the solution of one problem at a time, writing down each equation, step-by-step, until the unknown variable is by itself. I do this step-by-step process for each concept. Doing as many examples as needed for each student to grasp the concept being taught. I demonstrate that the way to fully understand a math concept is to complete examples of solving the same type of problem over and over and over again, until it is easily recognized when seen again! Practice makes perfect!
I have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from UCF. I am a former high school math teacher. I've been tutoring Algebra for over 20 years. I have 23 years of experience as a software engineer at Lockheed Martin.
