Positive, composed and determined person, with good aptitude of quantitative reasoning! I sought guidance from Syed, while preparing for an aptitude test. I had to prepare topics in Mathematics, Descriptive Statistics and in Bayesian Probability, which Syed planned in a manner that I gained lots of confidence and proficiency in around 2 weeks’ time. He is such a skilled and resourceful person. A much dedicated person who recognizes stakes of students in a respectable manner.

O
Olange

Syed is passionate, competent and stable headed. Manages time and difficult situations ,effectively. Highly recommended for trouble shooting as part of research/ thesis or in domain of quantitative modeling.

S

Passionate and Superb! Syed is a competent teacher with diversity and depth. I managed to grasp many technical concepts in domain of advanced regression. Highly recommended for quantitative methods and economics courses!

T
Thomas

Competent person with grasp and communication! He made incredible progress with my Biostatistics course, specifically in context of Epidemiology and inferential statistics topics, through tutoring and by use of the Stata package. My shyness and anxiety in dealing with quantitative topics has much been relieved due to his coaching. Memorable experience for me to have learnt from Syed!

M
Michael

Proficient and dependable! Syed is an outstanding researcher as well as an excellent mentor with lots of precision and patience in his coaching and in providing the feedback. I found him to be an extremely professional person with quality knowledge, immense proficiency in research skills and untiring nature. From adjusting my original research notions into well structured research hypothesis, to structuring research design and in choosing quantitative tools to suit research needs, he has been superb. Despite the fact that I spent quite some time while working on my thesis, I was surprised to see how the academic value of my dissertation improved within a short frame of time, because of his continual feedback. With his guidance I was able to experiment Autoregressive distributed lag ARDL models, Autoregressive Moving average ARMA models as well as Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity ARCH models, as part of my dissertation. I would highly recommend Syed, to students of research methods, quantitative modeling and to beginner’s in research who are in search of a mentor who will increase their capabilities drastically over a short space of time.

It has been an excellent opportunity for me to learn Advanced Microeconomics from Toqueer. He is quite an experienced teacher with full command over use of visual and algebraic illustrations, along with a strong theoretical knowledge. Superb experience of learning from him.

Y
Yoshita

Extremely privileged to have learned from Toqueer! His relentless contribution and generous guide as a Research Specialist/Analyst/ Supervisor to academicians, and exceptional knowledge of both qualitative research and quantitative modeling: econometric and statistical analysis is just a small reflection of his capabilities and strengths.

K
Kyla

Inspirational and supportive tutor, goes extra mile using examples and illustrations to ensure I understood difficult and complex topics. Articulate personality and precision in interpersonal communication. I am glad to have learnt from Syed.

S
Sandre

Toqueer is passionate, enthusiastic and above all, quite a stable headed person with natural inclination to approach rather complex situations, with clarity. His knowledge and exposure to deal with quantitative research seem to be deeply grounded in understanding of econometrics, statistics and mathematics, and he is used to demonstrate expertise in this regard tremendously and repeatedly. His worthy guidance, and comments may especially be seen as invaluable for research students, persons who are doing thesis for the first time in their life, and for those who seek guidance in quantitative methods.

Interview with Sayed

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Sayed — My fondness for teaching profession has traces at the stage of my schooling: when I and my siblings were used to ask parents about different occupations and professions, so that every one of us can choose a plausible career path, accordingly. I can clearly recall that my father was used to say that though prophets and saints opted quite a few professions, but teaching and health care are always being regarded amongst incredibly noble professions. I can say that the strong literary background of my parents predominantly appreciated my respect for teaching profession.
For quite some time, in pedagogical sciences it is being preferred that in order to ensure individual attention, small group of students have high efficacy, over large number of students. In recent times, theories of personality development further stress upon individualization. In this context we as academician require to assess personalized needs of students, with great diligence. In one on one coaching I carefully make use of case specific illustrations, examples, choice of analytical tools etc. to ensure in-depth understanding of the subject. If the subject in itself is rather complex, I make sure to simplify things.
I liked the Superprof. Portal as it gives comprehensive outreach to students, in form of one on one/ group caching and also through online consultation.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Sayed — My learning and teaching interests include Quantitative methods: Mathematical modeling; Econometrics; and Statistics, core subjects in Economics such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics, while heart of my academic proficiency lye in thesis supervision, in domain of Social Sciences and humanities. So far, I have supervised over 141 theses of Honor’s, Master’s and at M.Phil levels.
Regarding digitalized computational/ analytical skills, I am proficient in using Stata, SPSS, Minitab, Statgraphics, Maple, WinQSB, Nvivo and Turnitin, both in my teaching as well as in my research experience.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?.
Sayed —
I can clearly mention that I am providential enough that my father suggested me to opt Economics, Statistics and Mathematics as soon as I completed my schooling, as he viewed these subjects more close to my nature. Throughout my career, whenever my temperament and skillfulness is appreciated by my students or at International forums, I always thanked my late father, for assessing me so well. As I was duly equipped with different aspects of quantitative methods due to my long standing interest, I enjoyed quantitative proficiency not just in my teaching experience but predominately in my research experience as well.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Sayed —
A strong background in quantitative skills is a prerequisite for quite some time as there has been an intense use of Descriptive and Inferential Statistics, Econometrics & Regression analysis, Mathematics of chance: Game Theory as well as of mathematics of optimization: Linear/ nonlinear/ integer/ goal programming etc, in academic curricula and in research. Secondly, I feel that a good teacher essentially should have good sense of observational psychology: within a short conversation he/ she should carefully assess personalized needs of the student. And last but not the least, a good communication skill: ability of making simplification; wide choice of vocabulary and an easy going conversation style.
While tutoring, the timing/ stage of seeking student response/ feedback is always very important: un till I feel that student has grasped something, the feedback of the student is always being invited with a pause, so that he/she can participate effectively, without losing confidence/ faith.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Sayed — At a young age of 24, I was invited as visiting Professor to teach Econometrics to master’s classes. I had to spend days and night before the semester start, to fully grasp the subject as well as to fully absorb lecture contents, as part of my understanding. Getting such a tough assignment at a young age developed my temperament, and in rest of my career this time investment amused me a lot.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Sayed — I am bit skeptical that in last around one decade or so, due to extensive use of digital/ mobile gadgets and social media, we have witnessed that the ability of students to concentrate on academics has adversely been affected. Simultaneously, the habit of consulting books and libraries also witnessed slackness.

QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Sayed —
Potentially, I can manage to explain how students can be benefited through digitalization in education, specifically in domain of research. Secondly, I can arrange seminars on the incidence of plagiarism, how its incidence is being detected, how to avoid it naturally, and what legal complications can arise, if its incidence is established.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
Sayed — Precisely, I can say that I have sizable experience of teaching in above mentioned subjects; lots of experience as thesis supervisor; have 13 journal publications in the Norwegian Database of Scientific publication (NSD); was invited as International guest at Peradeniya International Economics Research Symposium in 2014; worked as a consultant on two contractual projects; and last but not the least, I have 14 International conference proceedings.
