Qualified practitioner of The Voice College, London with QTS in contemporary singing, based in Congleton offering local and online tuition

I'm Tracey Taylor, an industry-standard qualified teacher in the art of Contemporary Singing. I also work with teachers and others in the public speaking arena, looking at how to prevent vocal strain by applying healthy speech and projection techniques, as well those already experiencing vocal tension, aiding total recovery from the onset to late stages of MTD (Muscle Tension Dysphonia). Having worked also with an ex-throat-cancer patient to help strengthen his voice for projection, I like to encourage anyone who is experiencing voice problems to chat with me to see if I can help.

The art of learning how to use our voice more in line with the way it has been designed to work, has positive knock-on effects for the rest of our body -and mind. In order to sing or project our voice in public speaking with ease, we need to learn to erradicate compensatory muscle interferrence and work with the support for our voice. This in turn promotes the release of positive hormones associated with relaxation.

I adopt a holistic approach to singing and speaking understanding that, unlike other instruments, the whole of one's self is involved in the process of creating the sound and so my teaching approach embodies this. You can expect a relaxed atmosphere in my teaching environment with lessons taught through exercises and songs, visual aids, the practice of kinesthetic imagination, audio & listening, along with learning a little of the science to help you feel fully empowered in your learning.

In addition to being a qualified practitioner of The Voice College, I have spent time training under the Per Bristow "Sing With Freedom Method" and Institute for Vocal Advancment.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach from beginners to professionals, the art of Contemporary Singing. In addition, I work alongside teachers and those in the public speaking arena, coach guitar playing singers and teach guitar independently.

I offer a FREE 30 minute Singing Initial Assessment lesson and up to 20 minutes FREE consultation for other vocal coaching (including performance coaching):

The FREE 30 minute singing assessment: This includes an assessment of your vocal ability from one or two songs you bring (either to backing music, instrument led or accapella) followed by a discussion about your strengths, areas that we would work on, your aims and your goals. You also get to learn of my background and teaching method to see if it suits you.

You can expect variety from your lesson time with me, learning through practical application with exercises and songs, visual aids, the practice of kinesthetic imagination, audio & listening, and learning some aspects of science to give a more fully-rounded learning experience.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Pdip.TVC (Upper Merit) in Teaching Contemporary Singing from The Voice College in London, which has granted me Practitioner status within the establishment. I hold a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) enabling me to teach adults and minors.

I have completed the Institute for Vocal Advancement introductory teaching course.

I am qualified to teach musicality (rhythm and movement, ear-training, beat, sound-analysis and more) and to impart essential keys to unlocking natural singing (and speaking), teaching how to use the voice naturally, powerfully and effortlessly that in turn protects the voice from damage, adding longevity.
I have studied Jaques Dalcroze Education and the Feldenkrais Method ("singing with your whole self") and this plays out in my teaching method. I have also explored the Alexander Technique within my course of study and how this can be incorporated to help ease muscle tension - an essential element when singing.

- How much do you charge?

- *1st Singing of 30 minutes, is FREE (initial assessment, meet & greet and consultation).
- *1st Voice or Performance Coaching consultation of 20 minutes, is FREE
*Thereafter, lessons are £15 for 30 mins / £25/hr

- Where do you teach?

I teach at the Hummingbird Studio premises in Congleton, county Cheshire. I also provide online tutoring via Skype, FaceTime or ZOOM. Immediate towns nearby are Crewe, Sandbach, Holmes Chapel and Alderley Edge with Knutsford and Manchester not far away. Cheshire is next to county Staffordshire, with Stoke-on-Trent just 25-30 minutes down the road. Manchester is approximately 30-40 minutes drive north.

I will travel out, but only in exceptional circumstances. This will incur additional petrol costs.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

-Are you a shower-singer or wanting to see if you can make a go of it for a career?
-Are you wanting to sing purely for the holistic health benefits it brings?
-Do you experience hoarseness or strain and tension on a regular basis when you sing or speak? Are you a teacher, or in the public speaking arena, wanting help for vocal recovery from MTD (Muscle Tension Dysphonia) or the onset of it?
-Would you like to learn how to prevent vocal fatigue and problems arising, by learning how to properly use your voice and take care of it?
Then get in touch with me ~ I am here to serve and would LOVE to help and support you in your journey's destination ...To vocal freedom!

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualified, and response guaranteed. Tracey will carefully plan your first lesson.

- What kind of experience do you have?

Having many years of performance in my background and a love of singing, I stepped out to study the voice within contemporary singing specifically, in more depth. I graduated from The Voice College, London, as an accredited practitioner and I have been teaching the craft since January 2018 on a private and group workshop basis. In addition, I have two local mid-week singing groups that I lead, where people can enjoy singing their favourite songs without the pressure of performing.

Other experience I have is working with, and performing alongside, a school choir, along with other young peoples church singing groups. I have experience of performance coaching, stage direction and mentoring singers who wish to grow in confidence and leadership skills.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

- Where and with whom did you train?

The Voice College, London.
The Institute for Vocal Advancement (introductory course)

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

The Voice College, London.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have a number of students: Some who come to me every week, some who are sporadic. All are welcome!
My students range from beginner to professional: Those who want regular coaching and those who come to me occasionally for a booster / to check-in on their technique. At times, a student may wish to work on a song they are preparing to perform, which can include performance coaching should they desire it. I am presently coaching someone who has been accepted to audition for the Britain's Got Talent 2019 show.

I have a couple of students who class themselves as 'tone deaf', but they are not. However, a lot of work outside of our coaching times will be needed in order for the brain training (most commonly called 'ear training') to be effective.

I have a review of some of my students on my @hummingbirdvocalcoaching facebook page.

Perfect! Really positive and really patient with an absolute beginning. Strongly recommend!

Tracey's response

It is Trevor, Alison's dad, who has been bought a series of lessons for his birthday. Meeting him was a wonderful encounter! Such fun and I look forward to working alongside Trevor to see one of his life's ambitions realised!

Perfect! I’m so pleased we have Tracey as my daughter’s tutor. My daughter Ariella has developed confidence in herself and working well with the pace of the class as a beginner, and she looks forward to singing with Tracey each week. Ariella says “Tracey is the best teacher ever. She is nice and kind and funny”. Thank you Tracey!

Tracey's response

Kavita's daughter is a joy to spend time with each week. I have been so impressed with how quickly she has developed key musicality skills, which is really making an impact on her already gifted singing voice. She will go a long way!

Perfect! Tracey put me immediately at my ease; she is encouraging, very knowledgeable and passionate about her art. I can hardly wait for the next session.

Tracey's response

Steff has a lot of natural ability. She has had very little formal training and has discovered things by herself on her singing journey, which is really good! I am now telling her what those things so she can apply from a place of intention. Great stuff :)

Perfect! Right from the outset Tracey understood what I wanted to acheive and set right-to instructing and helping me to achieve that. I appreciate her friendly, reassuring and knowledgeable approach.

Tracey's response

Gilly is just WONDERFUL! A joy to work with. She is blest with a naturally powerful voice, so it is good working with Gilly to achieve a quieter tone... It is normally the other way around with students, as one of the main statements said to me more often than not from the outset is, "I want more power in my singing!"

Perfect! 10 stars for making you feel as comfortable as possible

Tracey's response

I am so glad you felt comfortable Lorna. I hope you;ll be back :o)

Perfect! Some really clear ideas of ways forward

Tracey's response

Lovely to meet Lorraine, she has clearly had operatic training - just needs to adjust into understanding how to apply CCM voice now! I'm looking forward to working with her!

Perfect! really enjoy working with Tracey and always look forward to my lesson

Tracey's response

Addie is a joy to work with. As an artist, she understands about attention to detail and step-by-step processes to accomplishing true art. She is keen to lay all the foundations in place and build upon them properly. Addie will become an accomplished singer :D

Perfect! Tracey's understanding of my daughter and my daughter's skills, capabilities are amazing. Great tutor, highly recommended!

Tracey's response

I have been working with Neeraj's daughter. She is a lovely young lady, excitedly preparing for an open mic competition! Neeraj is a great support, keen for her to do well... and she is! Aakanksha holds beautiful, natural ability.

Perfect! Great allround amazing Tracey is a great coach 10 out of 10

Tracey's response

Robert got in touch regarding booking some sessions for his wife as a birthday gift. The initial gift was both himself and his wife Em attending a singing crash-course day I held and they were both an asset to have at the workshop! They threw themselves into it, participating and having fun all the way. Em will continue to have private lessons with me and I am so looking forward to continuing working with her.

Excellent! Tracey has been a great tutor for my daughter. Flexible and generous with her time, and positive and enthusiastic.

Tracey's response

Working with Julie's daughter has been, and continues to be, a privilege and a lot of fun!

I can really recommend Tracey from Hummingbird Coaching. Her natural enthusiasm for her subject is infectious and her knowledge of the voice and its mechanics is extremely impressive. I had asked Tracey to help me sustain a specific character voice whilst singing, she gave me a number of tips which I have found extremely useful. Many of the tips Tracey gave, I have put into practice professionally and have genuinely noticed how much easier I have found singing since working with her.

I am a professional singer and theatre performer. I had a session with Tracey and found it highly beneficial to recap over essential elements that help good tone, such as tension release for example.Tracey worked through exercises with me that challenged my vocal agility, worked my stamina and fine-tuned my ear to pitch. I continue to practice what I learnt and my performances have benefited as a result.

Tracey is a fantastic teacher. She takes a highly personalised approach to lessons. I was keen to work on vocal range and definitely extended it after just a few sessions. She made the theory element seemed interesting. I have been singing for a long time, but haven't ever been taught 'how to sing'. I would highly recommend Hummingbird Coaching.

I love to sing but have have throat problems for quite a while. This has really affected my range and amount of time I can spend singing.
Tracey came up with a "prescription exercises" regime for me to try out, based on her studies of vocal health within her course. I have really noticed a difference and my voice is slowly being nurtured back to health.
Tracey is more than just a singing teacher. She is an holistic vocal coach who can help in all kinds of areas.

Tracey brings a range of teaching styles into her lesson time to accommodate different kinds of learners. For myself who predominantly learns through listening, I connected easily when Tracey explained things just through talking. However, Tracey brings a balanced approach in her teaching, involving visuals, objects, games, audio and movement, which caters for all kinds of different learners and broadens my learning skills at the same time. Tracey knows her subject and I highly recommend her.

Moureen Elsey, loves to sing

I had a course of lessons from Trace. My vocals improved so much. She is an excellent, friendly and patient teacher and she made sure I had understood everything throughout the lessons. At the end of my course of lessons, my voice was so powerfull, reaching the range of notes I couldn't reach before. I loved every lesson and will be back for more!

Las Ratnayake, loves to sing

Tracey is a lady with a special gifting to help people improve their singing. Try her out and you won't be disappointed.

I had some classical training as a teenager but I stepped away from singing for about 10 years.
I recently had some coaching with Tracey and I was pleased to learn that my training in classical singing proved a solid foundation for crossing over into the contemporary style of singing. Working with Tracey has really increased my confidence to step out and pursue more the love I have for singing. I have even joined a singing group! I would highly recommend Hummingbird Coaching.

I had an hour long session with Tracey and it was great fun! I learnt lots and found it fascinating learning about the vocal mechanism and how it works. We did some fun exercises too! I learnt a lot about my voice, about my strengths and the Hummingbird (:D) gave me tips to help on areas that weren't so strong, too!

Interview with Tracey

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
Tracey — When I was around 11 yrs old, I wrote my first piano piece. When I was 14, I took up the double bass and bass guitar as part of my GCSE studies. During my Music A-Level years, I particularly enjoyed composition and took to learning the guitar afterwards when I started university. I had a housemate who had two guitars so I was playing constantly, which really helped! During my time at university, I also began exploring singing and being part of bands, taking up tuition soon after completing my course. My favourite instrument is now my voice, because it involves the whole self and can produce a variety of timbres in ways that other instruments do not.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Tracey — Creative uplifting music with positive lyrics; music recorded in solfeggio tones (e.g. 417HZ, 444HZ, 396HZ and others)
QUESTION 03 | 08
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Tracey — The most difficult "course" I could give my student should they want it, would be 'vocal test competencies', which, at the more advanced level, include: demonstrating their knowledge and application of singing zones within registers (for example, demonstrating healthy belting from Power Zone to Power Zone), and demonstrating clean bridges between each register to create a seamless sound. I could also provide test papers with questions on the larynx, how the jaw affects resonance and more to embed that greater on-going depth of knowledge. Another "course" I could take my student on is the study of one particular song or songs, looking at the musicality of the piece/s, the approach of each word and phrase etc with a view to performing or recording it as a demonstration of their ability, adding it to their performance CV.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Tracey — I think the voice is the most complicated instrument to master because there are so many elements within the vocal mechanism that need to be working in harmony with each other, in order for a true resonant voice to be released. It's all about learning to work with the natural support mechanisms within our body, which are directly linked with our voice, not interfering with them. The biggest culprit, and therefore hindrance to singing, is tension and this is something we have to work on daily. The voice is never an instrument we can just pick up and play. Not only do the vocal muscles need warming up, just like any exercise we do, but as we have just learnt, we need to get our mind and emotions set in the right place too (in calm equilibrium) in order for there to be no tension (i.e. no other muscle interference) and this can obviously vary from day to day depending on life's circumstances. So it is not an instrument we can expect perfection from!
QUESTION 05 | 08
What are your keys to success?
Tracey — Realising I will never attain perfection - this helps take the pressure off, releasing tension thus helping me to relax and enjoy singing -and life! Having Faith. Thinking well of myself and choosing to be a buffalo in the storm, not a cow!
QUESTION 06 | 08
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
Tracey — My favourite bar would be a beach bar surrounded by Psamma grass filled dunes, where there is a cool breeze in the hot blazing sun overlooking the horizon (I guess it would need to be early morning for the cool breeze in the place I'm thinking of!).
1. The late Danny Kirwan, guitarist of Fleetwood Mac -his guitar skills on 'Big Love' are world class; 2. MUSE - I think they are excellent creative musicians and songwriters and would love to hear their story; and 3. The ancient biblical psalmist David who was famed for his singing, songwriting and musician skills. One of the first songwriters and musicians recorded in history.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Tracey — I will never forget the time some years ago when I travelled to play a solo gig and forgot essential components of my PA. We ended up strapping my microphone to a broom handle that my friend held whilst I sang! It was most embarrassing! Ever since that event, I double -even treble check- I have everything I need!
QUESTION 08 | 08
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Tracey — A Superprof - that's a big title for anyone to give themselves! I like to think that my methodical, attention to detail approach to teaching paves the way for this. I am keen to not overload and I like to give space to allow my student to lead where necessary. Perhaps my student wants to spend more time on a particular vocal skill, have thoughts, questions or queries they want answering or have a show coming up that they would like to focus time on.
Another little touch that makes for a Superprof in music, is a personable approach. I am a huge fan of offering a warm welcome and encouraging my students at every opportunity.
