My teaching methods vary according to your student's age, abilities, interests, and grade level.
I use objects which a child can touch and examine to teach vocabulary to younger students.
Middle school and High School students are taught using the workbooks that are supplied by the school and the teacher. Notecards and notebook are used for listing verb conjugations, vocabulary words and grammar, expressions, and foreign culture details. Correct pronunciation practice of all words is repeated until near-native accent is achieved. The interests of your student are taken into account, in order to provide vocabulary and idiomatic expressions that are useful and easily learned. I was a tutor on Wyzant, and you can see my 5-star ratings given by satisfied parents. I tutor at my home, Hudson/Streetsboro area, (good for younger kids, since it's a homestead, right next to a newer development called Stonegate, off Stone Road. Older kids like FaceTime, where I can check their homework to make sure it's perfect, plus quiz them on test material until they become proficient enough to earn top grades. I usually go past the time allotted at no extra charge, to enable your student to ask as many questions it takes to understand the grammar and cultural differences that exist in various Latin American countries. I am part Hispanic and part Scottish, my maiden name being Cordova, an 1840's Spanish descendant of New Mexico settlers.
Born in Washington DC, my Mother's Scottish side came over in 1750, before we won independence.
I look forward to meeting you and your student! I work with teachers, so they can monitor progress, and give me feedback and advice. Together, we can achieve your student's goals in a friendly and positive manner. Kids generally like me pretty well, and being short gives me an advantage in earning their trust!
I have been teaching and/or tutoring for 30 years in the Cleveland area, all subjects up to 8th grade, and Spanish/French through 12th grade. Having lived in Mexico from age 4 - 16, gave me the proficiency to speak and understand the language as a native does. Living in Paris, France for a year and a half at age 17, helped me to speak fluently, since I had attended a French Lycée in Mexico City for three years previously.
We return to Mexico yearly where we have a time share, which gives me many chances to practice with the locals in the markets, negotiating our purchases- all in good fun! Good communication skills go a long way to getting your needs met, and this is my goal, to feel confident in expressing yourself in English, Spanish, or French.
