University of Texas-Austin Spanish Instructor, PhD Candidate, Decade of Experience in Philadelphia

Methodology

I have a wealth of experience teaching and tutoring second languages, and living in Latin American countries. In total, I've spent four years living, studying and researching in South America, mostly in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. I have also traveled to Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and completed field work. My PhD research involves the racial imaginary of the Pampas of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. I've presented my work at Harvard University, Brown University, UT-Austin, the University of Buenos Aires and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.

Background

Aló gente! Hola para todos!

I currently teach Spanish and Portuguese language and Latin American literature and culture courses at the University of Texas at Austin, where I am a PhD student in Iberian and Latin American Languages and Literatures. In the fall of 2020, I taught a course of my own design at the University of Texas titled "The Brazilian Frontier: Race, Gender and Landscape". My course evaluations consistently rank me among the favorite instructors in my Department.

I received my Master's in Hispanic Studies in the summer of 2016. I have taught Spanish at Villanova University and Rowan College of Burlington County, in the Philadelphia Area, and English for 2.5 years in Chile and Argentina.

I have also worked as Senior Interpreter at the Villanova School of Law Clinic for Asylum and Refugee Services, translating and advocating for low-income, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking migrants. Social justice for these communities is something that has defined my professional and academic pursuits.

I'd love to share my passion for language with you or your child and look forward to speaking with you soon!

Saludos cordiales/Atenciosamente,
Ryan
