About the lesson
I am a New York State Certified Secondary Education English teacher. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 at Stony Brook University, NY, in English with a minor in Secondary Education. Two months after graduating, I began my first teaching job: summer school for high school seniors! My students were only two years younger than I. In 1989, I began my Master's Degree in the Teaching of Writing at Hofstra University. Impressed by my work ethic and ability to grasp and teach other graduates, I was granted the Lucy Caulkins Full Time Fellowship award. I have taught English on the junior high, high school, and college levels to students whose skills in reading, writing, and speaking English vary greatly.

About Jacqueline
I have been an educator for 27 years, and I have educated an estimated 3,500 students. My approach to teaching always begins with one simple assessment: understanding where the student's current abilities, strengths and weaknesses are versus where he or she needs to be in those areas. My job is to help the student fill the gaps. My approach is casual and amicable, but focused and goal oriented as well. I believe that people learn best when they set a goal for themselves and work toward achieving that goal one small step at a time. I like to build on students' successes and victories; even the small ones add up. Over time, students will notice growth in their confidence in speaking, writing, and reading. The positive results of my teaching have been impressive and documented. Last year, out of 127 students, most of whom were not proficient in English Language skills, only 2 did not show improvement. That growth occurred in only a matter of 8 months.
