Armenian Lessons: How Old is the Armenian Language?
Now, how old is the Armenian language, really? The first historical scripts in Armenian are dated from the 5th century, during the Classical Armenian period. The 5th century was known to be the Golden Age of the Armenian language. The Classical Armenian period was between the 5th and the 11th centuries, also known as the Grabar period. Many linguists have studied Classical Armenian and have stated that the the Indo Iranian language branch seems to be to closest to Armenian. However, the uniqueness and it's distinctive nature in regards to it's phonetics have made it mandatory to give the Armenian language it's own independent language branch. The Armenian language, over the years, was greatly influenced by Armenia's neighboring Caucasian languages. The influence then shifted between the 11th and 16th centuries, as it was now the Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Latin languages that came into play. The Classic Armenian period as we know it gradually shifted to the Middle Armenian period.
In the 19th century, along came the Modern Armenian period. Linguists have identified roughly 60 modern Armenian dialects. However, the majority of them are extinct. Two dialects took over the Modern Armenian period : The Western Armenian and the Eastern Armenian. In Armenia, the population speaks Eastern Armenian. Eastern Armenian is also spoken in certain parts of Iran and Azerbaijan. Western Armenian is spoken in Armenia's neighboring countries, just like Lebanon, Turkey and Egypt for example. Why? Western Armenian is spoken by Armenians who have migrated elsewhere. Before 1918, Eastern Armenia was part of the Soviet Union. Therefore, it is possible to notice some resemblances between the two languages. Russian influences are present in the Eastern Armenian dialect. Linguist Mesrop Mashtots created the Armenian alphabet in 405 AD. Mesrop Mashtots was born in 362 in the village of Hatsik and passed away in 440 in Vagharshapat. He was an Armenian linguist and composer, born in a noble family. He was also known for creating the Georgian alphabet and the Albanian alphabet. The Armenian alphabet originally consisted of 36 letters. Over the years and throughout the evolution of the language, two letters were added, giving the Armenian alphabet a total of 38 letters. The Armenian language is influenced and related to different languages just like the Greek language, the Latin language, the English language, the Gothic language, the Hittie language, the Avestan language and the Slavic language. Being related to these languages means that long ago, the ancestors of these said languages all spoke the same language. We call that language today the Proto Indo European language.
In the 20th century, during the Soviet era, Armenia was tied to Russia between 1920 and 1991. The Russian language was a huge part of their linguistic education and still is today. At the fall of the Soviet era, Russian classes declined drastically.
