What is your Chinese Zodiac sign?
Yin-Yang and the 5 elements: the philosophy behind horoscopes 🌗
If you thought the Chinese zodiac was just about 12 animals, think again! The system is much more subtle and reflects traditional Chinese cosmology.
much more than mere superstition.
While legends refer to the Jade Emperor, history tells us that this system was codified during the Han dynasty, combining astronomical observation with the philosophy of Yin and Yang. It is a fundamental cultural pillar, often studied in Chinese classes to understand the Asian mindset.
The major difference with Western astrology lies in the time frame. While the Western zodiac is solar (your sign depends on your month of birth), the Chinese zodiac is based on the lunisolar calendar. As a result, the sign changes every year during Chinese New Year (January or February), rather than every month.
⚖️ Yin and Yang: Complementary Duality
The concept of Yin-Yang (阴阳, yīn yáng) is fundamental to Chinese philosophy. It is not a binary opposition (good/evil, day/night), but a dynamic complementarity. Yin represents the feminine, the moon, cold, and interiority. Yang embodies the masculine, the sun, heat, and exteriority.
The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac alternate between Yin and Yang according to their rank:
- Yang (奇数, jīshù, “odd numbers”): Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog
- Yin (偶数, ǒushù, “even numbers”): Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig
This alternation is not insignificant: it structures Chinese thought. Mastering these concepts will help you understand traditional Chinese medicine, Feng Shui, and even military strategy (Sun Tzu makes extensive use of Yin-Yang in The Art of War).
In the Chinese horoscope, the analysis is more detailed than just an animal. Each sign is influenced by one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), creating a complete 60-year cycle. So, being a “Dragon” is not enough: being a Fire Dragon or a Water Dragon radically changes the interpretation of your personality!
The Five Elements and Their Influence on the Signs 🔥
The Wǔxíng (五行, “5 phases”) system adds a fascinating layer of complexity. Each element (元素, yuánsù) corresponds to a planet visible to the naked eye:
| Element | Chinese Symbol | Planet | Color | Associated Personality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | 木 (mù) | Jupiter (木星) | Green | Ethics, sense of duty, structure |
| Fire | 火 (huǒ) | Mars (火星) | Red | Spontaneity, energy, passion |
| Earth | 土 (tǔ) | Saturn (土星) | Yellow | Concentration, seriousness, stability |
| Metal | 金 (jīn) | Venus (金星) | White | Beliefs, determination, independence |
| Water | 水 (shuǐ) | Mercury (水星) | Blue/Black | Calmness, creativity, empathy |
The last digit of the year of birth determines the element:
Year ending in 4 or 5
Wood 🪵
Year ending in 6 or 7
Fire 🔥
Year ending in 8 or 9
Earth 🌎
Year ending in 0 or 1
Metal ⚙️
Year ending in 2 or 3
Water 💧
Concrete example: Were you born in 1997? You are a Fire Ox (火牛, Huǒ Niú). This combination of animal and element creates a 60-year cycle (12 animals × 5 elements = 60 unique combinations). This is why the Chinese celebrate their 60th birthday with such pomp and circumstance: it marks a return to the cosmic starting point!

The Chinese horoscope in everyday life: a social game 🎲
Now that you know the theoretical basics, let's see how the Chinese horoscope comes up in everyday conversation in China.
💬 Breaking the Ice with a Stranger
Imagine you meet a Chinese person at a language exchange event in Shanghai. After the usual greetings (你好 nǐ hǎo), your conversation partner asks you: “你属什么?” (Nǐ shǔ shénme?, “What animal are you?”). This innocuous question serves several social functions:
- To find out your approximate age without being intrusive
- To create a bond by finding common ground (“Ah, my sister is also a Rabbit!”)
- Test your level of Chinese culture (if you know your sign, you're already somewhat integrated)
Answering correctly shows that you're not just learning characters: you're genuinely interested in Chinese culture.
🎊 Chinese New Year: A Giant Astrological Celebration
Every year, between January and February, China stops for seven days to celebrate 春节 (Chūnjié, Spring Festival). This period, also known as Chinese New Year, marks the transition to a new zodiac animal.
2026 will be the Year of the Fire Horse (火马, Huǒ Mǎ), beginning on February 17, 2026. The Chinese then consult their annual horoscopes en masse to find out whether their animal will be “favored” or will need to exercise caution.
It is often even a difficult period (犯太岁, fàn tàisuì, “offending Tai Sui”).
People born in the Year of the Horse will therefore have to wear red underwear in 2026 to ward off bad luck (a fun tradition that is widely observed!).
If you are studying in China or Taiwan, participating in Chinese New Year celebrations is an invaluable linguistic experience. You will learn dozens of idiomatic expressions (成语, chéngyǔ) related to the animal of the year, understand cultural references in conversations, and create authentic memories. That's what true immersion is all about!
💑 Romantic Compatibility: A Subject of Jokes (and Sometimes More)
In the West, we often wonder whether a Leo can live with a Scorpio. In the Middle Kingdom, romantic compatibility is a much more serious matter, rooted in social tradition. In the past, before a marriage, families would exchange the “Eight Characters” (the Bazi) of the future spouses to check whether the union would be conducive to the prosperity of the clan.
Far from being a fatalistic verdict, Chinese astrology works on the basis of energy dynamics. It groups the 12 animals into four distinct groups, called Compatibility Triangles. Signs belonging to the same triangle share similar values and ways of functioning.
For example:
The Triangle of Directors
The Rat, the Dragon, and the Monkey are signs of action, ambitious and intelligent. Together, they form formidable teams.
The Triangle of Protectors
The Ox, the Snake, and the Rooster value reflection, stability, and devotion.
Conversely, each sign has its “sworn enemy,” usually located opposite it on the zodiac wheel (i.e., six years apart). This relationship is often conflictual because the temperaments are diametrically opposed. The most famous example is the duel between the Rat (thrifty, calculating) and the Horse (free-spirited, spendthrift). Other notable frictions include the Tiger, who struggles to tolerate the Monkey's tricks, and the Rabbit, who fears the Rooster's aggressiveness.
Chinese astrology is subtle: the influence of the five elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, Metal) can soften the edges. A Chinese culture course with a private tutor can also help you understand how to harmonize these opposing energies through Feng Shui or understanding others.
The Chinese Horoscope
Who said Asian astrology couldn't be fun?

Chinese legends about the signs of the zodiac are common and well developed, which explains why so many young Chinese people know the legends of Asian astrology inside out.
One legend explains that the generous Ox agreed to carry the Rat on its horns. As the race ended with a river crossing, the Rat jumped onto the bank ahead of the Ox, thus becoming the first sign of the Chinese zodiac. These stories form the basis for the placement of Chinese signs in the Asian calendar.
Legends are not necessarily reserved for Chinese children alone!
At college, for example, students sometimes give their zodiac sign rather than their age, which gives rise to a game among new arrivals. But it doesn't stop there: students sometimes tend to form certain social groups, knowing full well that a Goat will get on better with a Pig than with a Snake, for example.
For some families, the Chinese horoscope remains a daily ritual: parents and children can consult their annual horoscope and take stock of their friendships or romantic relationships, which often turn out to be in line with the horoscope's predictions.
Of course, this does not mean that it is impossible for a Rooster and a Rabbit to start a romantic relationship. In reality, the horoscope has a more positive aim, encouraging personal improvement and the pursuit of professional goals.
The Chinese Ascendant: Twelve Astrological Signs Per Day
In astrology, the ascendant is one of the elements that make up the astrological chart. It is calculated using the person's time and place of birth.

To calculate your Chinese ascendant, which is the astrological sign of your birth time, you will need to:
- Born between 1945 and 1976: subtract one hour regardless of the season.
- Born between 1976 and the present day: subtract two hours for people born during daylight saving time and one hour during standard time.
Then add 8 hours to the result and see which sign corresponds to your time:
11pm-1am
🐀 Rat
1am-3am
🐃 Ox
3am-5am
🐯 Tiger
5am-7am
🐰 Rabbit
7am-9am
🐲 Dragon
9am-11am
🐍 Snake
11am-1pm
🐎 Horse
1pm-3pm
🐐 Goat
3pm-5pm
🐒 Monkey
5pm-7pm
🐓 Rooster
7pm-9pm
🐕 Dog
9pm-11pm
🐖 Pig
If you were born at 1:50 a.m. on January 23, 1971: first subtract 1 hour (birth between 1945 and 1976 during daylight saving time), then add 8 hours, which gives 8:50 a.m.: therefore, a dog with dragon ascendant.
If you were born on November 2, 1985, at 9 a.m., you are a Buffalo ascendant Rabbit: you are patient and persevering, faithful in love, courageous, honest, and determined, and you see all your projects through to completion.
If the sign of the year (based on your year of birth) represents your “outer facade” or the way society perceives you, the ascendant (based on your time of birth) reveals your inner personality. It is your “traveling companion” that becomes more important as you mature.
The ascendant can either reinforce the traits of your main sign, soften them, or create a fascinating paradox. Here are three examples of combinations to help you understand this celestial mechanism:
🐲 The Ascending Dragon Monkey (Reinforcement):
- The mix: The Dragon is charismatic and ambitious. The Monkey (3pm-5pm) is clever and inventive.
- The result: An explosive and brilliant personality. The Monkey ascendant gives the Dragon the cunning it sometimes lacks. It is a born leader, capable of succeeding in everything it undertakes, but can be unscrupulous. It is the “Super Dragon” of the zodiac.
🐅 The Tiger Ascendant Rabbit (Softening):
- The combination: The Tiger is impetuous, courageous, and sometimes aggressive. The Rabbit (5 a.m. to 7 a.m.) is diplomatic, cautious, and homebody.
- The result: A velvet Tiger. This ascendant calms the beast's ardor. This is a person who thinks before they leap. Unlike the classic Tiger who charges headlong, this one uses the Rabbit's diplomacy to get what they want without bloodshed.
🐂 The Ascending Ox Horse (Contrast):
- The mix: The Ox is slow, methodical, and likes routine. The Horse (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) is free, fast, and unstable.
- The result: A hyperactive Ox. This is a complex personality, torn between the need for security and the desire for adventure. This ascendant makes the Ox much more sociable and open to travel, breaking with its usual austere image.
📅 A lunisolar calendar: Unlike Western astrology, which changes every month, the Chinese zodiac sign changes every year (12-year cycle) during Chinese New Year (between January and February).
🧩 A three-dimensional personality: Your complete profile is not just an animal. It consists of your Annual Sign (your social image), your Element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water—which nuances your character), and your Ascendant (linked to your time of birth—your inner self).
💞 Compatibility: Chinese astrology is a powerful tool for understanding human relationships. It works through “compatibility triangles” and antagonisms.
