Quiz :A Language with a Fascinating History
Let's take a little trip through time and space to learn a little more about Arabic, its history and its importance in the modern world.
Arabic is a Semitic language that has its roots in the Arabian Peninsula. It emerged as a clearly defined language around the 4th century AD, although some of its linguistic antecedents date back thousands of years. Its classical form, known as Quranic Arabic, is the language in which the Quran, the holy book of Islam, was written in the 7th century. This marks a crucial milestone in the history of the Arabic language, as it spread throughout the world with the spread of Islam.
Today, Arabic is the official language in 26 countries, including Egypt, Morocco, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Fascinatingly, although Modern Standard Arabic is commonly taught and used in formal settings, there are numerous regional dialects in the Arab world that can vary considerably from region to region.
In terms of the number of speakers, it is estimated that there are around 420 million Arabic speakers in the world, making it the sixth most widely spoken language. However, these numbers only tell part of the story. The influence of Arabic goes beyond its native speakers; it can be seen in numerous other languages, including Persian, Turkish, Kurdish, Urdu, Spanish and many more. In fact, if you've ever said "sugar," "cotton," "guitar," or "zero," you've used words of Arabic origin.
