What Is Major League Soccer?

It was established in 1993 as part of the United State's successful bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The league officially began to play in 1996 with 10 teams, but it has expanded pretty rapidly since, reflecting the growing popularity of soccer in North America.
MLS teams compete in a closed-league format, and new clubs are introduced through expansion. The season typically runs from February or March until November, with playoffs determining the league champion.

- Conferences: MLS is divided into two conferences, the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays a mix of intra-conference and inter-conference games throughout the season.
