Major League Soccer (MLS) has greatly evolved in recent years as it has been drawing the best talent from all over the world. That's right, MLS has earned its place globally!
In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about the different MLS teams, its best teams and players and some of the most memorable games in its history! Let's get started.
What Is Major League Soccer?
Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top professional soccer league in the United States and Canada, consisting of 29 teams as of 2024. It was established in 1993 as part of the United State's successful bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The league officially began to play in 1996 with 10 teams, but it has expanded pretty rapidly since, reflecting the growing popularity of soccer in North America.
MLS teams compete in a closed-league format, and new clubs are introduced through expansion. The season typically runs from February or March until November, with playoffs determining the league champion.
Important Features of the MLS Structure:
- Conferences: MLS is divided into two conferences, the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays a mix of intra-conference and inter-conference games throughout the season.
- Playoffs: The MLS season ends in a playoff tournament, with the MLS Cup awarded to the playoff winner. This is different from most soccer leagues across the world, where the team with the most points at the end of the season wins.
- Designated Player Rule: To attract international soccer players, the league allows each team to sign up to three "Designated Players" whose salaries exceed the salary cap. This rule has allowed MLS to bring in world-class players like David Beckham, Thierry Henry, and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
