Current ATP Rankings of Male Tennis Players

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranks male competitors worldwide based on their performance in specific tournaments. The ranking cycle spans a rolling 52-week period. Points are earned from results in ATP Tour events, Grand Slams, and other associated competitions. Rankings change every week, so they’re as up-to-date as possible in reflecting the athletes’ achievements.

So, while the numbers won’t match up depending on what week you’re reading this article, this list provides a snapshot of the current top names among male tennis athletes from the United States.

How do ATP rankings work?

Each sanctioned match awards players a specific number of points, which is used for ranking athletes against one another. For example, winning a Grand Slam (the French Open, Wimbledon, the Australian Open, or the US Open) yields 2000 points. Making it to the finals awards 1300 points, and so on, with the lowest amount of points given for Q1 or Q2 achievement (generally).

Time will tell which names go down in history, so keep an eye on these powerhouses to stay informed about the trends.

1. Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz is the current leader among American male athletes, with 4,645 points, and has reached an impressive ATP No. 4 ranking in November 2024.

Fritz's play style makes him a natural winner.

He won his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells in 2022, among nine other ATP Tour singles titles. Fritz has also been a consistent presence in the top 10, even making it to the Wimbledon semifinals in the 2025 season, and qualifying for all the other Grand Slams as well.

2. Ben Shelton

A former college player at the University of Florida, Shelton turned professional in 2022 and quickly rose through the ranks. He even achieved the ATP No. 6 ranking in August 2025.

As the winner of the 2023 Japan Open title and now a Masters 1000 title, Shelton is clearly a capable athlete.

His powerful left-handed serve often surpasses 140 mph, and his athleticism on the court makes him stand out even against more experienced competitors. Shelton reached the semifinals of the 2022 U.S. Open and the 2025 Australian Open, proving his champion-level skills.

If you want to be able to come through in the big moments, you have to be in the right place mentally.

4. Frances Tiafoe

Frances Tiafoe’s journey in the sport is both inspiring and impressive. Born to immigrant parents from Sierra Leone, he trained at a tennis center where his father worked as a maintenance man. He was the first Sierra Leonean American to be in the ATP top 10 ranking (at No. 10).

He won his first ATP Tour title in 2018 and has since won two more.

Tiafoe is known for his sparkling personality and showmanship, which make him a consistent fan-favorite. His most memorable performance was at the 2022 U.S. Open, where he defeated Rafael Nadal and reached the semifinals. He also reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 2024 and has appeared in 38 Grand Slam tournaments.

There is always light at the end of the tunnel. You either try and find it with small wins or continue to feel sorry for yourself and continue to play victim. That’s where it just gets darker and darker and darker.

He has already appeared in all four Grand Slam tournaments; even though he has yet to make it past the 4th round, it’s still a great accomplishment.

He managed to secure his first ATP Challenger title in 2023 and his first ITF World Tennis Tour title in 2022.

A former junior national champion, he is developing his game to focus on skills like shot placement.

Tien has already represented the United States in junior Grand Slam events (even winning the 2023 Junior Grand Slam doubles at the Australian Open) and is gaining valuable experience on the Challenger Tour. He reached a career high ranking of No. 36 in September 2025.

8. Jenson Brooksby

Jenson Brooksby’s unique playing style has earned him a loyal following among fans. His techniques result in a disruptive, hard-to-predict rhythm that disrupts opponents, causing them to falter.

In 2019 and 2021, Brooksby reached several ATP finals, securing multiple wins in the ATP Challenger and ITF World Tennis Tour. He also recently won the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in March 2025. He reached the No. 33 ranking in 2022.

Though he faced some injury setbacks early on, Brooksby’s creativity and tactical awareness make him one of the most technically gifted American athletes today.

This is not only about kids who want to become a tennis player. It can be someone who is on the spectrum with a dream of pursuing any career, in sports or otherwise ... if I can make a difference for anyone in the world ... even better.

9. Sebastian Korda

Sebastian Korda is the son of former Australian Open champion Petr Korda, so the sport is in his blood. Korda has a graceful one-handed backhand and an all-court game suited to every surface.

He’s also secured two wins in the ATP Challenger and in August 2024, achieved his second win in the ATP Tour. That year, he also reached his career high ranking of No. 15.

Historical Perspective: Legendary Male Tennis Players

Tennis rapidly gained popularity soon after its introduction in the United States due to its exciting gameplay and its reputation as a rich man’s game. But, above all, the interesting and strong personalities of the players enraptured fans. Like the game itself, athletes would (and still do) trade volleys in on-court dialogues and in the papers. It’s exciting to see friendships and rivalries reflected in a match!

Some of the best athletes through the years are known for their athleticism paired with their personalities. Here are some of the best male athletes in United States history who have helped pave the way for those who have followed.

Arthur Ashe

Ashe was a pivotal figure not only in the sport but in society as well. Early on, he was noticed for his talent and mentored by Robert Walter Johnson, who was the coach for another star, Althea Gibson.

In his professional career, he won his first Grand Slam title at the 1968 US Open, his second at the 1970 Australian Open, and his third at the 1975 Wimbledon. This last feat earned him the record of being the first Black man to win singles titles at all three of these Opens– a record that still stands today.

He supported the formation of the Association of Tennis Professionals.

It was in part created to protect competitors’ wages, and he became its president in 1974.

Unfortunately, he had to retire early, at age 36, due to heart problems.

He subsequently contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during heart surgery.

His career record was 818 wins, 260 losses, and 51 titles.

Beyond the court, Ashe became a great advocate for many social issues that presented themselves in his life, such as:

  • Banning South Africa from the Olympics due to apartheid
  • Raising awareness for genetic heart conditions
  • Raising awareness, spreading education, and working to break down the stigma of HIV/AIDS
  • Using his platform as a star athlete to call out inequalities in the sport and in society

He saw the sport as a means to an end in terms of raising awareness for various causes and changing the world for the better.

Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.

Arthur Ashe

Pete Sampras

Sampras was easily recognized in his heyday by the ATP, being ranked No. 1 for a total of 286 weeks. In his career, he was known as an all-time winner. Some of his stats include:

  • 64 ATP singles titles (including 14 men’s singles majors, which was an all-time record when he retired)
  • 7 Wimbledons
  • 2 Australian Opens
  • 5 US Opens

His strong playing led him to finish the year at No. 1 six consecutive times (another record). Sampras was also the youngest male athlete in history to win the US Open in 1990 at age 19.

Overall, Sampras boasts 52 Open appearances, an Olympic appearance, 6 ATP Player of the Year awards, and 6 ITF World Champion titles.

Andre Agassi

Agassi was notably only the second American man to achieve a Career Grand Slam, which he accomplished in 1999 at the French Open. That win also secured his Career Golden Slam and Career Super Slam– the latter achievement being shared only by Novak Djokovic. Also notable is the fact that no other male player from the United States has achieved any of these accomplishments since.

Agassi’s career is marked with a series of impressive stats, including:

  • 60 ATP singles titles (including eight majors)
  • An Olympic gold medal
  • 17 ATP Masters 1000 titles
  • 4 Australian Open wins
  • 2 US Open wins
  • 1 each Wimbledon and French Open wins

He overcame multiple dips in his career due to injuries and personal problems, proving at least twice that dedication can bring a person to success even after they falter.

After retirement, Agassi has become known for his involvement in charity exhibitions and for founding the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation and Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, which help at-risk children achieve a brighter future.

Rising Male Tennis Stars

The future of the sport in the United States looks promising. A new generation of athletes continues to emerge, driven by stronger training systems, better coaching, and broader access to international competition.

Follow their movement in rankings and ratings to see their progression!

These rising stars are worth keeping an eye on as they work to create a fruitful era in the sport in the United States. Perhaps they can even break the dry spell; there hasn’t been a Grand Slam title won by a man from the United States since 2003.

Ethan Quinn

Ethan Quinn won the NCAA singles title in 2023 and soon afterward turned professional.

He has already won several ITF World Tennis Tour finals.

Additionally, he has secured an ATP Challenger final and made it to several Grand Slam qualifying rounds.

Quinn also has strong skills in doubles with his partner, Nicholas Godsick, and the pair won the 2022 USTA Boys 18s National Championship.

Nishesh Basavareddy

During his Stanford days, he was named ITA All-American at the 2022-2023 ITA Fall National Championship, even receiving ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year honors.

Basavareddy even got to compete in the 2025 Australian Open as a main draw wildcard.

There, he surprised everyone by winning one set against and impressing Novak Djokovic.

He has attended all four Open tournaments in his second year playing pro.

He has already made runs past the qualifying rounds in all but the French Open.

American male athletes stand at a pivotal moment. They’re competing at a higher level than many of their predecessors in the past 20-odd years, meaning they will likely be the generation to get the United States back in the typical Grand Slam win rotation. Keep an eye out for these names in future winner statistics; you're sure to be hearing more about them!
