By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

Benjamin Franklin

There are over 8.3 million registered motorcycles on the roads here, and if you plan on adding to that number, then you’re going to want to stack the odds in your favor and prepare effectively for the permit test. Passing a DMV motorcycle permit test is a crucial step on the path to being able to legally ride your bike on public roads. The permit test is designed to ensure that riders are competent road users. The theory test reviews your knowledge of motorcycle manoeuvring, road rules, and safety practices. While the idea of a theory test might seem intimidating, if you know what test questions are likely to appear, the costs, and online testing options, you’ll be positioning yourself for success.

What Is a Motorcycle Permit Test?

Like with any challenge you are faced with in life, knowing exactly what you’re up against not only provides some much-needed clarity, but it also serves to inform your preparation and allows you to better target your progress. So, in the case of the motorcycle permit, it’s been purposefully designed to assess your knowledge when it comes to operating a motorcycle, safety practices, and traffic laws within the state where you reside. All of this is done in a written exam, so you’ll be able to do the bulk of your preparation from the theory book, driver's manual and any other supplementary resources you wish to incorporate in your learning.

The CMSP's 15-hour Basic Rider Course gives you a Certificate of Completion that lets you skip the motorcycle skills test at the DMV if you submit it within 12 months.

While it might be one of the preliminary steps that you take towards getting your hands on your very own motorcycle license, just like passing the minimum age requirement, it’s a pivotal one that enables you to drive on public roads and begin getting that much-needed riding experience. Before taking the DMV motorcycle permit, you’ll need to study traffic laws, road signs, and motorcycle-specific safety guidelines.

What Is Required Before Getting a License

The bar is set high when it comes to the level that’s needed for a rider to pass their practical driving skills exam.

This is most certainly justified, seeing as we want to ensure that the road is populated with skilled drivers who know their state’s driving regulations inside and out.

However, to get to the stage where your riding ability is at a level where you can pass the practical assessment, you need to have quite a bit of experience on the roads.

Of course, this doesn’t come magically. What the motorcycle permit test does is it ensures that riders have a strong understanding of the rules before they can start racking up the hours and getting some real experience on the roads.

It allows riders to get the reps in in a controlled environment. One example of this would be Virginia's motorcycle learner's permit, which allows riding only between 4.m. and midnight with a licensed motorcyclist who is at least 21 years old.

How Does It Differ From a Full Motorcycle License

Having two different kinds of licenses might cause some confusion, so let’s help you arrive at some understanding of how this permit differs from a full motorcycle license, like additional costs. The first thing that differentiates the two would be the restrictions that are placed on riders who have a motorcycle rider's permit. Your permit limits when, where, and how you can ride.

Texas's motorcycle learner license (J restriction) only allows practice riding with a licensed motorcycle operator 21 or over watching.

If we look over to Virginia, their permit limits riders to riding during daylight hours only and doesn't allow passengers.

You might think that having someone alongside you would only add to your safety, but if you’ve ever ridden a bike, you’ll know that the added weight of a passenger on the back of your bike makes it more challenging to operate. On the other hand, you’ve got the full motorcycle license or endorsement, which is the end goal.

This offers unlimited riding privileges without supervision or time limits, as in order to obtain one, you’ll need to have proven your competence and experience riding a motorcycle.

This is because there are a number of steps that lie between the two licenses that allow riders to develop their skills, such as having to complete an approved motorcycle safety course and pass a skills test. The requirements of the process will be determined by what state you live in, so make sure to pay attention to how they change from one state to the next.

What to Expect From Your Permit Test

Being prepared for your motorcycle permit test can mean the difference between passing and failing. You’ll be able to schedule the test at a time that suits you, so make sure that you’ve put the hours into preparing for it if you want to avoid having to spend your time, money and effort having to retake the test. Most states require you to take the test at designated Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Secretary of State facilities.

Preparing with realistic, explained questions is key to passing the DMV motorcycle written test—and riding with confidence.

While universities and high schools have transitioned many of their classrooms across to online mediums in recent years, permit tests have been slower to adopt the medium, so in most cases, you’ll still be required to sit your test in person.

Fee Estimation
$10-30

The fee that you need to part with for this step of the process is going to vary from state to state, too, generally staying inside a range of $10 to $30.

One of the best ways for aspiring riders to know what to expect is by working through practice tests. There is no better resource to implement in your learning outside of working with a private tutor than working through these tests that can be found on any DMV website. These tests usually have 30 multiple-choice questions, and most states want you to score at least 80%. You get instant feedback on wrong answers, which helps you spot areas where you need more study. In terms of the content of the assessments, road sign recognition makes up a considerable portion of the content, so be sure to brush up on traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.

Motorcycle Permit Tests

Learner's permits are typically valid for a limited time (e.g., 60 days in Connecticut or 120 days in Vermont), and may have restrictions on passengers, times of operation, and types of roadways.

Make sure to set all of the required documentation aside, too, to avoid any unnecessary headaches closer to the day. Most states just need proof of identity (driver's license, birth certificate, passport), proof of residency (utility bills), and your Social Security Number, too! If you’re applying for a motorcycle license, you need to note that when applying for your permit and you’re under the age of 18, you’re also going to need your parents’ consen.! Lastly, seeing as you're going to be out there on the roads, you’re also going to be required to have your vision assessed before you can get the go-ahead on your permit.
