Private tutoring is offered to any student that is having a hard time in elementary school, middle school, high school, or college. It is also for anyone who wants and needs academic support, wishes to improve on a given subject, and so on.

If you are a physics tutor and are having a hard time finding students to help and teach, this article is for you!

Keep in mind that teaching physics is not about hanging out a book to read and hope the student understands everything. Although they should read about the subject, it is a tutor's job to explain and teach each student the subject in a personal matter and help them through their years in school and with their education.

Even though it is not common, as a tutor, you can test your students and see how much they've progressed in their time learning with you. You don't have to grade the test but you can have them take a test during the first lesson and a test a couple of months after and compare their level of knowledge.

These tests will help you understand the student's strengths and weaknesses (and are not important for a grade), which you could use to help you prepare for each lesson and class.

You can be someone's tutor for a couple of months, an entire school year, or a couple of years. No time frame determines what is best for someone because what works for one person might not work for others.

Let's go

How do you look for students interested in hiring a physics tutor?

Many tutors tend to have a bad attitude towards searching for students to teach. However, no one will magically appear at your front door asking you to teach them physics.

You have to be your biggest cheerleader and promote your work everywhere you go. Tell people about your tutoring services, your level of experience, what's your degree, how many years you've been preparing for this, and so on.

If you want to be a physics teacher you have to show people that you are qualified, experienced, and prepared to teach subjects that go from math to thermodynamics.

Tutoring is about showing your clients you are qualified enough so that they can trust you and would want to work with you! And the only way to get people to trust you is by showing that you have the experience, resources, and capacity of being their tutor.

Online Tools and Resources

Nowadays we have a lot of free tools available for us online and all we have to do is start browsing and searching for what we need. Even though sometimes we might not have the energy to search for things online, we recommend you step out of that vibe and search away!

You can use platforms like Superprof where you can create your tutor profile and reach an online community that you couldn't reach any other way.

On Superprof you can advertise your work as a top physics tutor and share your experience and expertise with many other students across the country. By using this platform you won't have to go out of your way to find students who need high school or university level classes.

Tutors and teachers on Superprof tend to offer the first lesson for free because during that free lesson they can show students their teaching methods, answer any questions they might have, and so on. Students appreciate these free lessons because they get an opportunity to see how serious you are about their learning process.

There are plenty of other online resources you can access and use for each class you teach. Some resources might be specific for physics and others could be used for other subjects like mathematics, chemistry, biology, and other science branches.

Networking is key!

Networking is a great way to find students who need a tutor because you get the word out that you are offering a physic lesson.

Networking usually involves meeting new people that work in a different, the same, or similar field as you and sharing information or exchanging ideas.

It is about letting people know that you are working as a tutor and you are offering classes at a given level of a given subject. In this case, you have to let people know that you teach physics and you are searching for either high school, college, or university students interested in learning physics with you.

Networking will help you get your first students and you can get your business growing and find more students through them and so on.

The key is spending a lot of time speaking with people and letting everyone know that you are offering physics courses. If you don't want to tell people just yet because you don't know how much to charge per lesson, read more about how much tutors earn in the US.

After the first couple of years, you should no longer rely on networking to find students because you'll be known in your area and students would be recommending you to their friends or siblings and so on. Your business will grow if you put all your time and energy at first to make sure that people learn about you.

If you tell everyone you know about your courses you'll put yourself at the top of your community's list for tutors and teachers. People will learn about you from others, and you'll start to gain experience one student at a time.

Keep in mind that as a physics tutor you might need to have a background in mathematics —more specifically calculus— a little bit of chemistry, science, and so on. It all depends on the level you are teaching because if you are teaching physics to a student in engineering school, you might need more preparation compared to teaching to a student in high school.

If you don't feel like you are prepared to teach math or calculus, you can take a quick course or class where you can have all your questions about teaching math answered.

Move away from your comfort zone

Running a business as a private tutor can be challenging, especially if you refuse to go out of your comfort zone.

Some tutors expect to get students interested in their lessons just by networking with close friends or family. Even though you will acquire your first students through friends and family, you can't rely on them forever.

As a private tutor, you must step out of your comfort zone and use other resources (like the ones mentioned above) to search for students who want to hire you.

Teaching physics, calculus, or mathematics to your best friend's daughter is useful as you build your profile and gain experience. However, you can't count on all of your friend's kids to need a physics tutor at the level you are prepared to teach.

You need to work hard to look for students outside of your social circle and to do that you need to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself out there.

There are plenty of students searching for physics classes online that you are missing out on only because you aren't searching beyond your circle of known people.

You can put up flyers on a local library, a cafe shop you frequent, ask a school or many schools in your district if they could promote your tutoring service with their students and parents, and so on. The key is to look for people who are taking the subject you teach and require academic support.
