Steps of the Substitution Method

To solve a system of equations by the substitution method we will follow these steps:

1 Isolate one unknown in one of the equations

2 Substitute the expression for this unknown into the other equation, obtaining an equation with a single unknown

3 Solve the equation

4 The value obtained is substituted into the equation in which the isolated unknown appeared

5 The two values obtained constitute the solution of the system

Example of the Substitution Method

Solve the following system of equations:

1 We isolate one of the unknowns in one of the two equations.

We choose the unknown that has the lowest coefficient

2 We substitute into the other equation the variable x, with the previous value:

We solve the obtained equation:

We substitute the value obtained into the isolated variable:
