Growing up and studying math can be a really frustrating challenge for quite a few students. Math is rarely someone's favorite subject, you have to study a lot, think a lot, and do so much homework. Then there are the midterm exams and final exams when you get to high school, and of course, you have the SAT exam.

So why is math so important to the educational system in the United States?

Well, that is a pretty simple question to answer, people who are good at mathematics are really important to many parts of society as well as advancing society and industry.

If you have some amazing math skills you will certainly set yourself up for a really successful life in the future, especially if you **study **and **practice** your mathematics as much as possible.

In the United States, you won't have much trouble finding study resources for math at any level.

When you mention the need to study math, one of the most important topics that students will come across during their time in high school, and even early on in middle school is **algebra. **

Heading into eighth grade, or maybe even seventh if you are really good at math, you may be wondering what algebra is, certainly you've heard of it at least a little bit in the past.

Algebra isn't always easy, however understanding it and doing in your algebra courses between eighth and eleventh grade may put you on a path to getting into a highly reputable college or university, and then a high-paying job in the tech, engineering, or another type of industry.

Math is great to learn as it can lead you to a lot of different possibilities and algebra you can argue is the first step stone to that future, as at this age students will begin to have an idea of what they want to study in the future.

So let's take a look at what algebra is and how to study it in the United States.

## What exactly is algebra?

If you haven't already started to study algebra and are getting ready to study in the near future, or need a quick refresher, it would be a good idea to go over just exactly what algebra is.

Algebra has to do with symbols and the operations using these symbols, which are called **variables**.

In real life, we have problems that often change and we can't quite put a definitive idea on that problem. Variables in math work the same way.

Variables are represented by symbols like *x,y, and Z*.

Algebra is used to figure out what is the value of those symbols in an equation.

Learning algebra will be extremely useful for solving problems in different fields of study, such as:

- Engineering
- Physics
- Programming
- Technology

Basic algebra formulas use four different parts of an equation to get an answer:

- Coefficient
- Variable
- Operator
- Constants

### Using Algebra in our day to day life

Algebra is extremely useful, if not necessary in these fields of study and work, algebra can also be extremely useful in our day-to-day lives even if we aren't MIT physicists. It is an excellent way to think of solutions to possible problems that could change over time or haven't exactly appeared yet.

While you use algebra on a day-to-day basis without actually writing a problem with a coefficient or variable, we unknowingly use algebra just about every day.

- Arriving somewhere on time
- Sports
- Cooking
- Working out

These are just a few of the examples of the activities that we use algebra for on a day-to-day basis.

You may not have ever realized it, but when you try to think how long it will take you to get to school or work you use algebra.

What if there is traffic? What if something else stops you?

Based on those **variables** you probably decide to leave earlier or later than perhaps you originally planned.

For sports, imagine you are a quarterback or going to shoot a three-pointer in a game of basketball. You must try and figure out how much power or force you need to put into your shot or throw to score the basket or make sure the ball lands in the hands of your receiver.

You never knew it, but this is algebra.

From waking up and going somewhere to play sports and more, people use algebra, and that is one of the reasons getting better at algebra in school is important for students everywhere.

Being from one end of the United States or another you may now be wondering, how you can study algebra in your area.

### Studying algebra in middle and high school

In the United States students are normally required to take at least two levels of Algebra.

Normally in eighth-grade students will take Algebra I and then in tenth or eleventh grade, Algebra II. As mentioned earlier, algebra forms a pretty important part of our day-to-day lives, which is one of the reasons why it is obligatory to take this math subject.

It will also be pretty necessary for learning other more advanced math topics and be especially useful for those who wish to go on and study something mathematics-based in college, like engineering for example.
