Chess is a board game that has been around for many centuries now. The game we currently play originated in Southern Europe in the 15th century and that game had evolved from Indian and Persian games.

Today, chess is one of the most popular board games in the world and it is played in clubs, at home, online, and there are even international chess tournaments.

This board game consists of a squared board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. There are two players, one controls the white pieces and the other the black pieces, and they each get 16 pieces (one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns).

The goal of the game is to "checkmate" the opponent's king, in other words, to attack the king by eliminating all its possibilities of escaping.

If you want to learn to play chess, in this article we will explain why learning with a tutor is so beneficial and recommended. For more information read about Chess Resources for Beginners.

Benefits of tutoring

Getting private lessons, for whichever subject, can be very beneficial for many different reasons. The most notorious benefit of private lessons is how fast students improve.

As a student, you can compare how long it takes you to learn things in class with how fast you learn with a tutor. The time won't compere because a tutor has something to offer that teachers in school don't, and that's their undivided attention.

A tutor will dedicate all the time they have of class to attend to the needs of one single student. Imagine you meet with your tutor three times per week and each class lasts one hour. That means you will have a teacher's complete attention for three hours per week.

A teacher in a normal class usually meets their students two or three times per week but the difference is that they have to divide their attention amongst all the students. For example, if you meet that teacher for three hours each week, how much time do you think they'll give you individually?

And we are not here to undermine the job of a teacher, our point is to show you how beneficial it could be for you, as a student, to work with a tutor on your own.

Tutors can be a complement to regular teachers. They have experience working one-on-one with students and they can give them more exercises, teach them tricks, and more. Private tutoring has the potential of helping you or your kid reach an academic goal much faster and more efficiently.

Here is a list of Tips and Tricks to Get Better at Chess.

Learn Chess with a Private Tutor

If you'd like to learn to play chess, you could hire a tutor and learn faster and better than others. Tutors can teach you some great tricks on how to defeat an opponent, give you the best secrets, and teach you skills you wouldn't learn elsewhere.

Since chess is a game, a chess tutor is more like a coach and a teacher at the same time. The chess lessons or classes with a tutor could be considered as your first tournament as a chess player. And your tutor will be your first opponent and the first person you will heat in the game.

You can find tutors that have been chess players for a while and have a great experience both playing and teaching the game. If you're at a beginner level you need to find someone comfortable explaining all the basic rules of chess.

The coaching lessons you'll get will prepare you to play with expert players. Once you understand and master the game you can check yourself in local tournaments if your ambition is to play pro.

If you only want to start playing chess for fun you still can have coaching lessons with private tutors. In the future, once you become a top player, you can even start teaching chess to other people, either for free or as a coach yourself.

We imagine that during the pandemic you won't want to meet with tutors, but don't worry, you can have online chess coaching lessons with tutors on Superprof.

Cost of Chess Private Lessons

The cost of private lessons will vary depending on some key factors. The years of experience of the person teaching the class can be one of the most important factors influencing the price of a lesson.

For instance, a chess player who's been playing for years and also has years of experience teaching will charge more per lesson than someone who is starting as a chess coach.

Another factor that might change the price of a lesson is whether you meet in person or if you have it online. An in-person lesson will cost more than an online lesson because the coach has to consider transportation into their price.

You should also pay attention to the rating of a chess coach. The rating tells you how good someone is and that should tell you if you'd like to learn from them or not.

A chess lesson in the US right now costs between $15 to $40 per hour. Remember that we told you the prices vary because it depends on the experience the tutor has teaching and playing the game.

Basic Chess Rules

Now that we've told you everything you need to know about learning to play chess with a private coach, we will proceed to give you some of the most basic rules in chess, just in case you're at a beginner level.

As we mentioned, chess is a two-player board game using a chessboard and sixteen pieces. Each type of piece moves differently than the others.

The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king. Although, games do not necessarily end in a checkmate; someone who expects to lose may resign or it can also end in a draw in several ways.

Aside from these basic factors and the moves of each piece in the board, there are also rules for the equipment used, time control, conduct and ethics of players, and recording of moves using chess notation.

The moves of the pieces

The king can move one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. There's a special move known as castling and it is allowed only once per player, per game. The queen moves any number of vacant squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

A rook moves any number of vacant squares horizontally or vertically. It also is moved when castling. A bishop moves any number of vacant squares diagonally.

A knight moves to the nearest square, not on the same rank, file, or diagonal. The knight cannot be blocked by other pieces, it can jump to the new location.

A pawn moves straight forward one square if that square is vacant. If it has not yet moved, a pawn also has the option of moving two squares straight forward, provided both squares are vacant. Pawns cannot move backward.
