CPC certification costs $654 in AAPC fees for most first-time candidates. That covers a $425 exam voucher and the $229 annual AAPC membership you need before you can sit the exam. A voucher with a second attempt costs $499, which brings the total to $728.
The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential comes from AAPC, the world’s largest training and credentialing organization for the business of healthcare. Students in an AAPC course pay less: $400 or $475 for the exam and $164 for membership. This guide covers every official fee, plus the study costs that sit outside AAPC’s price list.
AAPC fees for a first-time CPC candidate
a $425 single-attempt exam voucher plus $229 for a year of AAPC membership
What Does Each CPC Fee Cost?
You pay AAPC twice before exam day. First comes membership, which every candidate needs to schedule the exam. Then you buy an exam voucher for one or two attempts.
Fees
CPC Exam and AAPC Membership Fees
| Fee | Standard | AAPC students | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPC exam, 1 attempt | $425 | $400 | Voucher valid for one year from purchase |
| CPC exam, 2 attempts | $499 | $475 | Second voucher opens after your first results |
| AAPC membership (required) | $229 a year | $164 a year | Student rate for AAPC or approved-partner courses |
| Total, 1 attempt + dues | $654 | $564 | Lowest official cost to sit the exam |
| Total, 2 attempts + dues | $728 | $639 | Adds a retake within the same year |

A failed first attempt isn’t the end of the road. With the two-attempt voucher, your second voucher becomes available once your first results are released. Both vouchers must be used within one year of purchase, or the payment is forfeited.
The retake option costs just $74 more than a single attempt. If you pass the first time, though, AAPC won’t transfer the unused voucher to another exam.
What Is CPC Certification?
The CPC is a professional credential from AAPC. It shows that a medical coder can turn medical records into the standard codes used for billing and documentation.
In plain terms, coders read what doctors write in patient files and translate it into codes. Insurers then use those codes to process claims. To earn the CPC, a coder should understand these areas:
- Medical coding for different body systems and procedures
- How to read and code medical records
- Code sets such as CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II
- Coding rules and guidelines
- Healthcare laws and regulations
- How to bill for different types of medical visits
- Coding for anesthesia, radiology, laboratory, and pathology services
- Medical terminology and human anatomy
How Much Does CPC Exam Prep Cost?
Study materials are where budgets differ most. Some candidates spend only a few hundred dollars on books and practice tests. Others choose a full training package. Here are AAPC’s own prices for the core materials:
Prep
Official CPC Study Materials
| Resource | Member price | Non-member price | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam book bundle (2026) | $244.99 | $269.99 | AMA CPT Professional, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II |
| CPC study guide | $99.95 | $149.95 | Print or eBook, with practice questions |
| Practice exams (bundle of 3) | $79.95 | $209.85 | Bundle A–C or bundle D–F |
| Exam + study guide + 3 practice exams | $649.99 | $858.80 | Includes one exam voucher |
| Exam + exam review + study guide + 3 practice exams | $799.99 | $1,207.80 | AAPC’s most complete self-study bundle |
Source: AAPC online store, checked Oct 5, 2026. Membership is required to sit the exam, so most candidates pay member prices.
The code books are the one purchase you can’t skip, since the exam is open book. For a better value, consider AAPC’s exam and study bundles, which pair the exam voucher with the study guide and three practice exams.
AAPC also sells full CPC training packages. Each one includes two exam attempts, a study guide, a practice exam, an online review, and a year of AAPC membership. Package prices vary by format, so compare the current options on aapc.com before you buy.
What Else Affects Your CPC Budget?
Beyond the fixed fees, a few choices shape what you spend overall. Plan for these factors before you register:
- Exam attempts: the two-attempt voucher costs $74 more and gives you a backup within the same year.
- AAPC membership: dues of $229, or $164 for AAPC students, are required to sit the exam and to keep your credential.
- Training format: self-study with official books and practice exams costs far less than a full course package.
- Code books: you need current printed books or the eBook option, and new editions come out every year.
- Remote or in person: testing at home saves travel, but you need an external webcam and a closed, quiet room.
- Employer support: ask your manager whether your employer covers dues, books, or exam fees.
Join AAPC before you buy any study materials, since you need membership anyway and member prices are much lower. Choose the two-attempt voucher if you’re unsure about passing the first time. And schedule your exam well within a year, so your voucher doesn’t expire.
What Is the CPC Exam Format?
The CPC exam tests how well you apply medical codes, not just how well you remember them. Most questions present real patient cases. Here’s how the exam works:
Exam
CPC Exam Format at a Glance
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Questions | 100 multiple-choice questions |
| Time limit | 4 hours |
| Passing score | 70%, or at least 70 correct answers |
| Delivery | Live remote proctored at home, or at a testing center |
| Code books | AMA CPT Professional, plus your choice of ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II |
| Notes and tabs | Allowed in printed books if they relate to daily coding; not available in eBooks |
Source: AAPC, checked Oct 5, 2026.
You can take the exam at home with a live remote proctor. For that, AAPC requires a closed room with covered windows and an external webcam with at least 720p resolution. You also need a reliable computer, the Chrome browser, and an internet connection of at least 5 Mbps.
What Are the Requirements for the CPC Exam?
You don’t need work experience to sit the CPC exam. AAPC asks candidates to complete courses in anatomy, pathophysiology, and medical terminology first, unless they already have healthcare experience. On exam day, you need current AAPC membership, a valid voucher, and a government-issued photo ID.
Candidates who pass without two years of coding experience earn the CPC-A, or apprentice, designation. It carries the same exam result, and you can remove the “A” once you meet the experience requirement.
How Do You Remove the CPC-A Designation?
AAPC offers several ways to replace the two years of on-the-job experience. You complete one of these options and then submit the Apprentice Removal Application:
- Two years of coding work: employers verify your experience with CPT, ICD-10-CM, or HCPCS Level II codes on signed letterhead.
- One year of work plus education: pair a year of coding experience with AAPC’s Practicode program or an 80-hour coding course.
- Practicode plus an 80-hour course: each counts as one year toward removal, and AAPC’s CPC preparation course meets the 80-hour requirement.
- AAPC’s Job-Ready Program: a structured AAPC training path that also counts toward removing the “A”.
AAPC processes most removal applications within two to four weeks. Once approved, your credential changes from CPC-A to CPC.
How Much Does It Cost to Keep Your CPC?
Keeping a CPC active costs $229 a year in AAPC dues. You must pay your dues every year, even in a year when you don’t report CEUs.
You also earn 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years. You report them on or before your membership renewal date. You can earn them through AAPC itself or through its approved CEU vendors.
Is CPC Certification Worth It?
For many coders, the CPC pays off. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median wage of $51,140 for medical records specialists in May 2025. It projects 8% job growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average.
Certification also helps at the hiring stage. The BLS notes that employers may prefer certified applicants or expect new hires to earn certification soon after joining. AAPC sees the coder’s role growing, too:
The CPC-M reflects the evolution of the coding profession and the growing expectations placed on experienced coders. Our members are being asked to do more than assign codes.
