Learning about contemporary dance is not only about knowing what technique to use or learning how to improvise. Although you must dominate the movements and surpass your mental blocks, you also should learn about its history, the dancers who shaped the genre, and so on.

For instance, the development of this genre is accredited to three performers, Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, and Merce Cunningham and it was developed as a way of rebelling against what was already established.

Learning the theory is going to help you understand some basic and essential parts of this art form and it can also help you decide what line or influence you'd like to follow and do.

In this article you're going to understand how to search for a dancing academy or tutor, what are the pros and cons of having dance classes at school or with a tutor, and much more.

Keep in mind that even if you are at the best school in the country or learning from a renowned dancer, if you don't put in the hard work and hours of practice, you won't improve.

Developing a new skill is all about the passion and dedication you put into it!

Finding a good dancing academy

There are so many options out there that finding the perfect place to get an artistic education can seem impossible and a little overwhelming.

The key to finding a good program, company, performance academy, dance conservatory, or professional dance school is through good research.

This means that you first need to familiarize yourself with the subject you're interested in, in this case, contemporary dance. If you learn what it is, what you can expect, where can you go, and all the different factors, then you'll be able to make your decision much faster.

For instance,  you need to define what are your goals. If you want to go to university and get a degree in the arts, then you need to find out what you need to get into university and into the program, you're interested in.

If you want to become a contemporary dancer as a hobby you can consider finding programs or schools that'll offer classes for amateurs, dancers at the beginner level, and so on.

Finally, if you want to become a professional dancer but you want to do it outside of school, you can still search for a conservatory or theatre that offers classes to single students looking to become artists.

Once you define the modality you want, you can go ahead and define your budget, availability, achievements wanted ideas for the future, and more.

For example, if you want to perform in a theatre, you should find a professional program that offers presentations every year. Or if you're low on budget, you can search for an organization (ORG) or an international program that you can afford.

It all depends on what you want, what you need, and what you have. But it also depends on how badly you want to dance, how many hours of the day you dedicate to training and technique dominance, and so on.

Pros of learning at a dancing academy

Learning contemporary dance either in a class with other students or through private tutoring is very different and each of these modalities has its pros and cons.

Some of the pros of attending a school and having a class with other students are that you get an opportunity to learn from the mistakes and accomplishments of your classmates. You get to meet other people who have the same interests as you and it can make your training much more interesting.

Dancing through emotions

Another pro of learning in schools or at university is that your education can go to another level because you'll be networking with students at another level and artists with a bigger trajectory than yours.

With private tutoring, you're on your own and the only person you can learn from is your teacher while they're teaching you.

At a conservatory or a school, you'll have courses with different teachers and you'll get the opportunity to see everything your school offers to students in the arts.

Schools design different programs that can be adapted to each student. This is a great advantage because it allows you to design your year around your classes.

Schools also offer international opportunities for students to travel, study, and work at the same time. You can do one year abroad at an international school and the rest of the years and courses in your city.

You can look up the institutions or classes famous contemporary dancers and artists took when they were students like you and go to the same programs or courses.

Pros of learning with a private tutor

If you don't feel like paying a company to teach you the arts, then you can opt for private tutoring. As a student, you have many benefits if you learn with a private tutor.

For instance, one on one lessons are personalized and your training will be designed in a way that is catered to you and your needs. In a normal company, dancing center, or studio, students are at the mercy of other students.

This means that you have to share your teacher with other students and sometimes this means waiting for the teacher to teach others something that you already know, understood, or dominated.

If you have a tutor, each class will progress at your own pace, all of your questions will have answers, and you'll have the privilege of having your tutor's undivided attention.

You can ask your tutor to teach you a specific choreography or to help you study the work of artists like Martha Graham or Isadora Duncan. You can also ask your tutor to stop teaching you contemporary dance with jazz influence and switch it to ballet influence.

All you need to do is find a tutor with years of experience in modern dance and you'll see how you learn from their dancing technique and art form in no time.

You can search for a dance tutor right here on Superprof. Keep in mind that some tutors work from home, others can come to your house, and others do have a studio or center equipped for lessons and performances.

Some people believe that learning with a private tutor can take ages, but it will take as long as you allow it. If you cancel your classes or don't practice on your own time, then your progress won't be as good as other dancers.

If it is challenging to find a dance academy, maybe it is a sign that you need to switch to private tutoring, continue reading to understand how a tutor can help you perform better.

Why is private tutoring helpful?

People tend to believe that it is either private tutoring or an in-person studio with dancing lessons. Nonetheless, many dancers can mix both learning methods to improve their skills.

For instance, you can go to a dance studio and hire a tutor to help you perfect the movements of a modern choreography you're learning in class.

Much like a private tutor for math students, who will help them improve their skills and understanding of the class they attend in school. Both learning methods are valid and don't need to be mutually exclusive.

A private tutor also has the ability to teach you other things, like the history of the genre, the different icons who shaped it, and more. In a dance class, teachers don't have time for lectures, and to learn everything else you would need to read about it elsewhere.

Private tutoring is also great because as a student, you get the opportunity to design your class schedule with your tutor. In a course or academy, you must adhere to the established class schedule. However, with a tutor, you have a chance to discuss your availability and disponibility.

Keep in mind that you can start your search for a tutor right here on Superprof. If you search for a tutor on Superprof, you can ask for their contact info (like their email or phone number) and have a direct conversation with them. Take advantage of the fact that you have their contact info to ask any questions you might have.
