Food is necessary for survival. However, not everyone knows how to cook. Some are natural-born chefs, whereas others can't even crack an egg properly.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment Projections program, there are currently 148,700 chefs and head cooks. They have projected that by 2029 a 6% increase in the job market.

A survey done by Impulse Research of 1,087 people concluded that 28% of the population in the U.S. cannot cook. One of the reasons behind this was because their partners cooked instead.

Research done by Yoon states that 90% of Americans loathe cooking. Meaning only 10% of the U.S. likes cooking. The majority despise this valuable skill, yikes!

On Average How Much Do People Cook

A 2019 survey done by Kitchen Stories showed that more than 37% of people in the U.S. cook between 3 -5 days per week.

Another survey conducted in the same year by oven manufacturer June states that only 20% of U.S. citizens cook daily.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, people are staying at home more. As a result, they have adapted to a new lifestyle where they partake in hobbies and activities that they previously did not- and cooking is one of them.

According to a survey by consumer market research firm Hunter, people in the U.S. are cooking more during the pandemic, and 71% say they will continue to do so even after the pandemic is over.

Online Cooking Classes

Remote work has become the latest trend during the pandemic, as have online classes.

Going on YouTube and looking for guidance is different than what an actual cooking class provides.

When going through a random cooking video, one can pause and rewind, and for queries, there is always the comment section. But during a virtual class, the student gets their answer on the spot.

The instructor is there to guide them along the way. Better to have a one on one session than just following a video, right?

Moreover, you cannot know whether the techniques being shared online are relevant anymore or not. In a lesson with an experienced cook, they can tell you about the latest cooking trends.

In a report, sales and marketing agency Acosta shared that 35% of people have started to love cooking. However, this ratio is more than 10% of those who do not like to cook every day.

Types Of Online Cooking Lessons

Every course has its own goals and appointed time; some are long, others short. Some focus on baking while others focus on savory.

For example, if you are looking for French cooking lessons online, in particular, your chef will have different skills, and the duration of each class will vary.

There is a long list of cooking classes one can pick from. Online cooking classes usually fall under four categories:

Live Cooking Courses

If you are among someone who likes to know what is going on and wants to be a part of the conversation, then this type, of course, is for you.

They are more intimate and teach you how to make unique dishes. Moreover, they are either one on one sessions or in a group setting. You can even book classes as a group activity for you and your friends.

Sur La Table holds live cooking courses, which cost $29 per class.

Private Lessons

As the name suggests, these lessons are exclusively on a one-on-one basis. You get the teacher's undivided attention and decide what you want to learn.

SOSAB in Washington DC charges $40 - $95 per hour.

Virtual Cooking Classes Delivering Food Kit

It may be a hassle to go and buy specific ingredients, especially during these times. However, this problem is sorted by online cooking classes that deliver the ingredients to your place before the class.

It cannot get more convenient than that.

Pre-portioned dinner kits have been in demand throughout the year. Cooking tutors adopted this idea and made a package where those who sign up for their courses have an option to get the ingredients delivered to them.

Extra charges are applied for the ingredients.

Cuiline offers to deliver the ingredients when you sign up for their cooking course; you do have an option not to opt for it.

Pre-Recorded Cooking Classes

Cannot commit to cooking classes due to your schedule but still want to learn how to cook? Then pre-recorded cooking classes are perfect for you!

Watch them on your own time and hit the pause button when an important call has to be answered or when you miss a step.

The Masterclass is one example of this. World-renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsey and Alice Waters have dozens of lessons in the form of pre-recorded videos uploaded there. Get a membership and learn at your own pace.

Its subscription plans start with a standard membership costing $15 a month billed annually for $180.

There are free cooking lessons available too.

Online Cooking Classes Charges

You can decide what kind of classes you want to conduct.

For example, will you be catering to parents searching for how to teach cooking classes for kids? Or are you more interested in teaching baking? Pick the theme of the course and then set the price accordingly.

Many things are to be kept in mind when setting the price for the class:

  • Experience and qualifications
  • The category (live, pre-recorded, private lesson, etc.)
  • Types of recipes
  • Level of the course (beginners class, expert level)
  • Size of the class
  • Class duration
  • Frequency of classes
  • Location

Head chefs and sous chefs are not paid the same salary as they have different experience and job descriptions.

The same is the case for cooking tutors. They need to consider their expertise, experience, and what they will be teaching. The higher their value, the more they can charge.

It is common to expect beginner-level cooking tutors to charge less. However, they still need to state a price that covers their expenses and leaves them some margin for profit.

On the contrary, a chef who needs no introduction can charge more for their classes as people will be more willing to invest their money. After all, the name speaks for itself.

Extra money can be charged if the ingredients are provided. If they are being delivered, then delivery charges are applicable as well.

A cooking tutor has to consider their expenses and how much they are investing in the class. Also, research is vital to find out how much competitors are charging and the amount people will be willing to invest.

The average cost for cooking classes is $45 per hour. However, in some places, the price ranges from $25 - $100 per hour.

Benefits Of Cooking Classes

Cooking classes are a study of the art of food. As a cooking tutor, one should make sure their potential students know the importance and benefits of cooking (This helps attract more customers!).

There is a lot that students can learn from cooking classes, such as new recipes, how to improve their presentation skills and the utilization of common ingredients.

Be sure whoever is reading your ad is aware of what their experience will be like.

One major benefit of joining a cooking class is:

Increases Confidence

Exposure and knowledge are gained from culinary classes. Everyone is scared to mess up when cooking, and that is also what a cooking tutor teaches; what to do when a mistake happens.

For example, if pasta is too salty, add starch to it to balance out the salt.

Moreover, learners are taught how to cook several different types of food. Thus, they do not need to panic anymore when choosing what to cook for the day.

Practice makes perfect. A good instructor helps the student get to a level where they can independently solve any problem that arises all by themself.

Cooking classes don't teach one how to cook but can also ignite their passion. One finds out how a dish can be cooked and gains enough self-assurance to experiment with food independently.

Let's Get Cookin'!

A cooking tutor who helps pupils gain confidence in their cooking skills will undoubtedly go a long way.

Many people hesitate to join classes because of low self-esteem as they worry about messing up. As a mentor, encourage them and let them know how to fix their mistakes, so their interest increases and fear decreases.
